Anybody out there shoot 58 roundball ? If so what's a good load for a 1:48 28 " barrel ? Just picked one up and seems to some discrepancy in min/max loads. Would appreciate first hand knowledge from someone who has one.

Wow, that's reaching back...I used to shoot one long time ago. I had a CVA Big-Bore Mountain Rifle for a couple years and like a fool I sold it.

For paper punching, I used 75 grains of ffg...Inside of 60 to 65yrds...it was a good load. I'd have to adjust my point of aim, because this gun was a hunting gun and so sighted with my hunting loads in mind. If a shoot had targets out at 100 yrds plus a little bit, I just used my RB elk load due to the drop of the projectile. Much beyond 50 yrds...it dropped pretty good, with just a 75 grain load...

For hunting elk, I used 105 grains of ffg, under a patched RB, and it was a hammer on elk.

Using a Maxi-Ball I used 95 grains of ffg, stout load to shoot from the bench, but great elk medicine.

I once had a T/C Renegade Big Bore .58 with the 1:48" twist and 27" barrel. It was my hunting gun, so I only shot a hunting load of 120 grains of 2f with a .570 mink oil lubed .015 patch. My 75 yard groups (as far as I would shoot with open sights) were around 2.5". the gun thumped on both ends, but every deer I shot with it went toes up on the spot.

One of the mythical guns you hear about but never get a chance to buy. That's what I was looking for when I found this InvestArms.
I suspect it will shorten my bench shooting shots.

There's a Big Boar and a 58cal Renegade on gunbroker right now. Same feller has them both. He ain't givin'em away but I've seen worse prices.

Good load for what? Targets/plinking, deer/hogs, bigger game, dangerous game?? Why don't you just shoot it with various loadings & find out what the rifle can do? The internet is not going to give you the "secret" formula, but that seems to be how everyone does it these days.

Just got the manual downloaded and it appears 100 grains FFG is factory recommendation..presently all I have access to is FFFg if I understand the ratio between FFG and FFFg I'll need to back it down to 70-80 grains. Thanks for the information.

My Big Boar .58 shoots a Real 445gr 8.5 Bhn water quenched cast with a 2f Goex charge accurately. A Prb of .562 , sane (same) powder charge and .018 Ox yoke patch does well enough. I bet either would do just fine on Elk out to 80 yards. No need for more powder unless ya want to flatten trajectory or your shoulder. My Pedersoli Kodiak Drills the bullseye at 50 yards with that load and with either projectile- 80yard about the same few inch low. Plenty of oooooommmmffff

CVA .58 Mountain Rifle 1-66twist .562 wheel weight round ball , ticking patch and 120grains homemade powder.

Aint that the truth. No one seems to know how to work up a load, even in metallic cartridge reloading everyone tries to find a mythical magic load that will work in every x gun firing x projectile with x powder in x chambering.

Forgot to mention, my .58s have 1:48 twist- Think the pedersoli double is deep rifling. All I know is PRB hits dead on at 50yards and small groups. Only 75 grs needed- oh and Crisco for Real Bullet.

This same feller now has a genuine unicorn for sale. A 58cal TC Hawken. And it's a Flinchlock! Why couldn't I have been born rich instead'a so damn good-lookin'?
