.58 gm replacement barrel

i have a .54 t/c renegade with 1'48 twist and thought about getting a .58 replacement barrel 1'70 twist for better accurancy.i would like to go bigger that wy a 58 and just curious if the cost is worth is worth it. i have tried everything i can think of and just cant seem to get under a 4" group at 75yrds.i had a .50 t/c hawken that did the same.is this normal for 1'48 and t/c? i do know i can get better groups with horndy great plains bulets but i would like to stay with a rb.

Lots of variables come into play. I've never had any problems getting the kind of performance you're looking for from any of my 1:48 barrels. But it took fine tuning the load and methods. The same is true for slower twists, however. A slower twist is just not a magic formula for accuracy unless you've got your act together. You might be doing everything right with the 1:48, but there might be some hidden gremlins in your methods that will go right on happening with a slower twist. That's what happened to me anyway.

But. I say again, but. Picking up a 58 cal is a worthy ambition! I love the caliber, and in fact own four of them. One is a slow twist GRRW Hawken, two are TC Big Boars with 1:48 twist, and the last is a TC Hawken with a custom barrel, which coincidently is also 1:48. Can't tell them apart with the right loads and loading methods relative to twist, but you can sure tell the difference between any of them and a 54 cal in the landing zone.

Bad news time. GM has gone out of the replacement barrel business. You'll have to find one used or have one built. But in my opinion and growing experience, it's worth the price to have a 58, whether with a slow twist barrel or a 1:48.

i have just gotten a gm .58 barrel from totw. just hit the notify me button and you will get a email when they come in. they told me they only get a few in each month due to a large military order they are working on.
so there is hope. btw i have tc hawken and renegade guns too. you have to play with various loads to get them to shoot. try hoppes black powder solve, what a difference it made. cut my groups in half. good luck.

I have a gm slow twist barrel in 54 cal , and yes its worth getting one , the tc barrel is junk ,mine couldnt group a rb , so tried tc maxi ball , it would get 4 inch group at 50 yds . so I got a gm slow twist barrel , at 50 yds it shoots one hole group and at 100 yds I,m getting 3 inch group wiff rb using 90 grains ffg and .018 patch , I heard gm not making barrels but I called them the other day and they say there going to still make them but right now there filling up the military contrack. Another thing is u can get a gm slow twist barrel blank and a tc breech plug from track of the wolf , they make up barrels for tc , lyman etc . They can put it together , dovetail for the sights etc , all u do is just brown or blue it .

BI...I use both Hoppe's and Moose Snot.at the range I did not need to swab between shots using either..I can tell you the the Hoppe's will work down to 23 degrees any temp below I go with the Moose Snot.

Just to give some balance to this thread...your statement might read as an "across the board" statement. YOU may have had any number of reasons why you couldn't shoot well when you happened to have a muzzleloader with a T/C barrel in it...but to say that "the TC barrel is junk" based on your individual experience is really not a fair representation.
By contrast I've used about a dozen and a half of them since the early '90s and they're excellent with PRBs...both the standard 1:48" and of course the slower twist 1:66", both caplock and Flintlock.

Another aspect that's become apparent over the years is that many times people refer to a GM slow twist barrel being more accurate than a TC barrel...but without realizing it, very often they're really comparing a 1:70" GM slow twist barrel to a standard 1:48" TC barrel...apples & oranges...in fact, most of the time they don't even know that TC makes 1:66" slow twist deep groove PRB barrels.

The shallow groove 1:48" barrels always shot PRBs extremely well when used with tight fitting PRB combos...as one example with a 28" x 1:48" x .54cal shallow groove TC barrel, high power hunting loads of 90grns Goex 3F, Oxyoke wool wad, .018" pillow ticking, Hornady .530s shot 100yd groups from the bench that fell in the range of 1+7/8" to 2+3/4" with tired eyes.

I got my tc hawken used , came wiff the factory barrel , 28 inch 1-48 twist , I tried different patch thicknes 015 to 020 and 530 to 535 rb using 90 to 120 ffg , my barrel wont shoot a group wiff a round ball for nuffin , and using a tc maxi ball i get 3 inch groups off the bench ,at 50 yards and I swab between shots , think the barrel is wore out , hardly see any rifleing in it. So dats why I said tc barrels are junk . Now wiff my gm barrel it shoots great one hole groups at 50 and 3 inch at 100 using 90 grains of ffg

But Grizzy, I have 15 TCs now and 14 shoot fine but one doesn’t want to group as well as the others. Had it been my first, should I also conclude TC barrel are junk? I just got a Lyman, (I only have one.)GPR in 54 cal and it shoots fine, so all GPR barrels are prizewinners?
