Two beautiful rifles. I love the flintlocks, but have no problem with cap locks, actually seems even more appropriate for a Hawken rifle.

Thanks, for showing, and best of luck, hunting.

Scott, you have a good eye. Those are modified triggers. They are L&R-1400, which have curved blades. I heated them and straightened them some. Trigger blades are the toughest steel I have met with.

I had duplicate photos on Photobucket and deleted one. So here is the one replaced for my text above.

Well, Everett, a Ute Indian, came through with his Log Cabin Hawken parts set, all excellent parts. He had to wait a year for a .54 Green Mountain barrel, and they couldn't get one so shipped him a .50 GM barrel, 1" x 36". I had an identical but .54 with a premium bore (as checked with a bore scope) so will use that in his build. He has grade CM-4 wood ($232.95) all correctly inletted. Wants a true Hawken but different. I had a brass butt plate, and he wants that, so I traded for his steel. There were original Hawken plains rifle halfstocks with brass fittings. Has brass keys and wants the steel escutcheons left in the white. Heat blued furniture and cold blued (Oxpho blue) barrel. The long adjustable rear sight. Stained and colored like my flint plains rifle. 13 3/4" LOP.
He has killed two bull elk and a buffalo with muzzleloaders and knows exactly what he wants. Oh, did I say that I will have it done in late October for his elk hunt? Already started on it.

Howdy Herb, you are an inspiration to us all.I was wondering why you changed the profile on the .58 flinter, the comb seems to be higher than some of the other rifles you have built. Also what did you use to stain the stock.Thx..D...

I sawed it out with a handsaw and whittled it out and thats how it came out. No particular design, don't know why I did it that way. But I like it with that short length of pull. I stained it with Laurel Mountain Forge Lancaster Maple, which I like very much.

It is an L&R Late English flintlock with double throat hammer from Muzzleloader Builders' Supply. The frizzen spring broke after about 20 shots but I called MBS and they sent me out a replacement spring, only asking me to return the broken one. I like this lock.
