I'm sure that I will find my own loads for my new .58 but I thought I'd post a general question anyway. With a .58 the starting load ( as a general reference ) would be 1 1/2 times the caliber, or 87 grains of powder. I just bought a green mountain .58 barrel with a 1-70" twist and a Lyman .570 RB mold. I am dropping this barrel in a T/C Renegade percussion stock. What would You consider a "Target" load and what would be considered a "Hunting" load? Do any of You shoot a similar configuration? Tell me what You have experienced with this caliber. I have not taken delivery on the barrel yet and am anxious to gather information. Thank You for Your time.

My targit load is 90 grs. FFG Goex, .570 roundball, .018 ticking, in my Early Hawken Fullstock .58 with 36" GM barrel.
I boost the charge up to 110 grs. FFG fer big-game.

The .58 has become my favorite for targits, as well as fer hunt'n big game after years of shoot'n most everthin else from .45 up to (and include'n) .75 cal. :m2c:

I'm sure yore gonna be very pleased with yore .58!! :applause:

I have the same barrel in Flint, in a TC Hawken stock.
I don't use it to target practice as it is fairly expensive with store bought balls...spo I only use it for hunting, and settled on the following load:

100grns Goex FFg (2F)
.62cal Oxyoke wonderwad
TC .018" prelubed pillow ticking
Hornady .570/278grn ball

Extremely accurate, zeroed at 50yds, dropped 3" at 100.

More gun than I need for Eastern deer at typical woods distances but "had" to have one...took two bucks in November at no more than 50yds, complete pass-throughs both times.
