I have long time admired the Carson and the Bridger rifles for the short beefiness of both rifles. I have finished and photographed my latest Hawken build which is based on these two rifles. It is a .58 caliber Hawken with a 34" Rice barrel. It has a taper of 1 1/8"- 1 1/16" at the muzzle. This rifle weighs 11 lbs.

These are shot with a new camera and program I am playing with. The usual place that I like to shoot these rifles is in shadow. I will shoot some detailed shots and post them tomorrow.

Cooner,
Your camera work is just fine as far as I can
see.As to the Hawken you have done a
beautiful job on it:bow::applause:I think I
will leave those 11pound puppies to the
younger or more fit than I, older folks:wink:
I just can't see me hauling that around all
day
while deer hunting. My .50 and .54 Hawkens weigh
maybe 7or7 1/2 pounds, still at times I wish
I had a gun barer. I know I should be in
better shape :rotf:.
snake-eyes:thumbsup:

Sean, I got the rearsight, buttplate, and iron nose cap from Don Stith and the guard from TOTW and reshaped it. The rest of the hardware I made from sheet iron. The lock and breech is Ron Long's from Davis.
I am glad that you guys like the looks of her. Even though this rifle is a beefy 11 lbs it is very well balanced and hangs right on target. I always shoot a new rifle just enough to get the sites lined up just right. Got to make sure it works good before ya sell it. Quality control. :hmm:

With 100 grs. of 2F Goex and a thick tight weave canvas patch and a .575? It shoots one ragged hole at 60 yards off the lazy mans rest. That is leaning against my van and shooting over it like a bench only standing up on my hind legs.

Beautiful, Cooner! I don't believe there has ever been a finer rifle than a half-stock Hawken. Even including the modern cartridge stuff.

How'd you manage to bring in a .54 Hawken at 7 1/2 pounds? Mine weighs in at 9.9 pounds and is still nice to carry. With 100 grains of FFg and a .53 ball recoil isn't noticeable and accuracy is great. Regardless of weight, a Hawken is a prized possession.

Here are some full length pitures and a close up of the lock bolt side. This last pic came out a little on the red side. :shake: A bit to hot.

That is leaning against my van and shooting over it like a bench only standing up on my hind legs...Oh hel.. thats how I have to stand up to keep from falling over and I havent drank in years! :rotf:(all these years I was getting ready for the lazy man shooting match and didnt know it! :rotf: ) Fred :hatsoff:
