Just wait till you slap a coat of pretty on that baby! What a beauty she'll be!

I didn't know that's what you finally ordered. .58 Not .62. Nor .54. Interesting choice... I'm SURE It'll be nice.

AHHHH.....the suspense of waiting for delivery of a new toy. :haha: Looks like she will be a beauty. Yes, please post finished pics when you can. Congrats. Rick. :hatsoff:

I am a novice to flintlocks and have been admiring
the pictures of your about to be new acquisition.
What style or school is this? I also noticed the
butt plate has what is to me a long tang similiar
to my just acquired Brown Bess.

this is a new england fowler, However I went a liitle by the wayside with the build. All of the hardware was chosen by mike lange (the builder) I did however choose the barrel and caliber. The barrel its self is a colerain swamped, octogon to round smooth bore. Its 44 inches long and will ahve a front blade and a rear sight. I am not really all that worried about being hc/pc to the letter. I was perfectly happy with "Mostly correct"

Alden,

The reason I went with .58 is that I hunt deer mostly but am in the middle of making plans to move north..to maine possibly and I wanted something that I could use to hunt larger animals. I guess i could ahve gone with a .54 but then I thought about it and I will use this for squirrel hunting as well so I went with a slightly larger bore but .58 is still reqasonably econimical to shoot. My next build will be a .62 fusil de chasse for sure they are just damn sexy!

OK It's a perfectly dandy set of compromises. You may use my word: "fowlerifle."

Don't think I have a .58 smoothbore. Not sure I've held one before come to think of it... At least one that wasn't just a shot-out musket.

I'm sure they must make overpowder and overshot stuff for them.

Now, did he really tell you this was "swamped" octagon-to-round!? Or tapered!

Byron,

Looks like a real beauty!

I shoot a 24 bore fusil myself. 75 gr 2f, half a fiber cushion wad, bare ball and the other half wad. Sure make the gongs ring! Haven't killed anything bigger than a tom turkey so far, used #5 shot for that.

Best of luck. Post some more pics when you get 'er finished.
..

no I specifically chose a swamped barrel...imagine if you will a regular barrel with a little extra meat on the end. I wanted swamped to help with overall balance as I will mostly hunt deer with it.\
Obviously I ahve not held it yet, but mike has had nothing but praise for the feel of the rifle . He said it was a good choice

thnaks kenny I think she looks pretty damn nice...I guess the only thing i would change is the length of the octagon portion of the barrel, i wish it was a bit shorter...but thats out of my control

That-length of oct. maybe there to help balance, and on a rifled version for a longer distance to the rear sight.

Soli Deo Gloria!

Uber cool :hatsoff:

I have had a few .58 in smooth (non as pretty as yours) and they do very well with shot to a useful 30yds I can assure you.
A couple have been outstanding to 50yds with a ball too. One would take rabbit to 60yds nearly every shot it was that accurate!

B

LOOKS GREAT. - Are you going to do the final finishing of metal & wood yourself?

Fwiw, I'm planning of having a 16 or 20 gauge LH percussion "pore boy" rifle built with a cherry stock & plain iron soon & I want to stain the wood & brown the metal myself.

yours, satx

so here a few pics of the stock in the staining phase...just recieved them in my email. Sadly I am doing none of the work...this is my first completely full custom fowler and i didnt want to mess it up.
