I want to try shooting trap with my tulle, however I have to be fairly quick in reloading. The Octber 96 Muzzleblasts has a good article on making shot cartriges for a 20 gage. It calls for a 24 gauge overshot and cushon wad. I need about 5 for making experimental cartriges before I spring for a full bag, is anyone willing to sell, trade or (perhaps) give me a few?
Has ony one tried this? What about fouling? Are there any leads on articles?

Hey Dread, that smoothbore Lore booklet you made up for me has an article in it on using the .24 ga. wads to make paper shot loads. I still have the Tradegun. Am refinishing the stock on it now, trying to fix some of the builders goofs. Hope to have it finished next week some time. Then i get to see how she shoots. Take care.

I would think that the overshot wad wouldn't be necessary, if the paper was folded over the top of the shot, then sealed with white glue or even glue from a glue stick.
: This would give an even thiner wad, however a 5/8" arch punch will cut all of your 20 bore wads. They're about perfect for 20 bore without a paper wrap, but another 6 thou for paper shouldn't be too bad.
: If you spring the $5.00 for a 1,000 bag of fibre wads, A fibre wad can be split into 3 or 4 thin pieces for over/shot as well. The comercial "B" wad really isn't necessary, and the thin donacona wad might disturb the pattern less, being lighter and more fragile.
: It's a good idea for someone to package up and mail you some wads, but wouldn't it be simpler & cheaper just to buy a bad of fibre wads as they'll do the job of all three.

Have been shooting trap for several yrs ..not with much success .. from my 20ga. smoothy.
Not saying this is the best but it works for me .

I use a piece of 5/8 dowell to roll the paper cartridge . take a 2oga fiber wad ,split it in half ,put half down to the bottom of the cartridge ,pour in my 70grains of 2 f . Then the other half of the wad.
Now using the same powder measure ..fill with shot ,pour it in on top of the wad . Fold over and ...DONE.

This load patterns ok for me ..I shoot a 20guage Virginia smothbore and have had a lot of fun with it . Any misses are my fault ..not the guns.

Hope this helps. if you can't get 20guage fiber wads any 5/8 punch and old fiber insoles or fiber underlay will do the trick .Do NOT use any synthetic or poly fiber just incase it would damage the barrel.
I have a friend who took a piece of milled pine 1/2 inch . Drilled 5/8 holed through it , he then soaks paper towell/newspapers into a mass .fills the holes ,presses out the excess water ,lets it dry then pushes out pretty good wads. Don't take a lot of handling as they are not the same density of the fiber wads but is a cheap homemade cure .
Good luck :m2c: :redthumb:

Hi DW, I make mine the same as the article, using 24 ga. wads. Everything in there except the powder. I use them in my Tulle for trap and hunting. They work fine. What did you want, some 24 ga. wads? No problems with fouling.
Email me your address and I'll send you some.

Stews...When you say, "I use a piece of 5/8 dowell to roll the paper cartridge . take a 2oga fiber wad ,split it in half ,put half down to the bottom of the cartridge ,pour in my 70grains of 2 f . Then the other half of the wad.

Unless I'm missing something here, you end up with a wad on each end of your powder.....Is that what you meant to say?
Would you elaborate just a bit on this.

I have found that by using two dowels to center one fiber wad in my paper cup, (one dowel from each end) using white glue on the fiber wad, then rolling my shot cartridge, I can have shot on one end, powder on the other. Sometimes I use an OS card on the shot end...either way, it is still glued over in "flap" style fold.

When it comes time to shoot............
The powder end of the paper is torn, the powder is dumped, and the rest of paper shot cartridge is seated down on the powder.
And...I have only one item to deal with in loading! I love this part.

I have just about done away with a OS card, as the shot seems to break out of the paper just fine by it's self. The reason I still use an OS card "sometimes" is because I'm always afraid I may loose my shot from tipping the barrel down, or bumping it, or whatever.

This is my first year with a smoothbore and my learning curve has been bent backwards.....it seems to never stop!

:sorry: :youcrazy:
told u I didn't have a lot of success!!
No , I completely gave you the instructions backwards.

try this
in the cartridge
1. i/2 the wad
2. the shot
3. last 1/2 wad
4. powder
tear ,pour the powder , ram the tube.
Now that should work...My apologies. o wonder I couldn't hit anything.

I have had alot of fun with these loads , they are easy to put together (when u have the proper information ) ,easy to carry and make for a quick load. The wad at the bottom gives the tube some definiion and I also use my lube on this bottom part to make the load ram easier.
good luck

Hey... :applause:

All right Stews! Now we be cookin!

Had me scratchin my watch and winding my butt again...or was it scratching my.....Never mind! We be cookin!

I was thinking that your cartridges must produce alot of misfires.

yeah , too much time looking at logos and stuff. nice to be back in the land of the living..
anybody doin shooting? i'm recovering from surgery and the house police wont let me out for another 2 weeks . like to hear some stories...
take care. :redthumb:

I'm a Rev War re-enactor. I have a Fowler. (A Bess, a Jager, a Virginia rifle, a canoe gun and about 5 cap n ballers.) Making paper cartridges is very easy. You don't need any glue or special secrets to load your Fowler.

I found a websight that shows you the best way to roll and fold the paper. It's from a Civil Warr re-enactor, but the cartridge is the same. http://www.3rdalabama.org/roll_cart.htm

After you roll it, using your dowel, place the shot in first, then the cushion wad, then the powder card, then the powder and fold her up.

Tear the paper with your teeth, pour a small amount of the powder into the pan, then the rest down the muzzle, and just ram the rest home on top of the powder...You're loaded.

Of course making sure that you ram the wad end (the end you opened) in first. The paper of the cartridge itself will be your top card.

You will see that when making the cartridge, you twist that top end of the roll, it becomes as strong as a paper card.

My only cautions are that you may have to play with the load volumns again, I tweeked mine just a bit for my .62 fowler, and you may have to play with different pappers to find one that blows open when it leaves the muzzle.

Get a "Belly Box" Cartridge box for your belt, and you're ready with 12 to 20 loads.

Happy shooting.

Checked out the web site . The method shown is the same as I use . It also is one of the best detailed and graphic I have seen posted . Great examples . Thanks . and Hello!! :RO:

Same here, and another "Hello".

I did pick up something I found very interesting......Did you notice the end of his dowel? and what a nice "crimp" it would make when twisted over a smaller dowel? with a crimp like that, one could easily load an OS card first, then dump the shot...surely that "crimp" would hold things in place, w/o using the other fiber wad (in front) to give "substance" to the cartridge.
A "Belly Box" is fast becoming a necessity.
I am working on another dowel...gotta try this!

Thanks a bunch!
