Thanks, Capt. Fred: I am only guessing at the thickness of the ticking you used.

If you want wider patterns with that gun, even using nice shot, just increase the powder charge, or switch to 3Fg powder from 2Fg. The faster you push the shot out a choked barrel, the faster it opens up. I learned this from a friend who knew I only had a full-choked Trap gun to shoot skeet with, years ago. He handed me some 3 dram, and 3 1/4 drams loads, and I hit more targets. ( If you can break skeet targets using a full choke shotgun, you will have no trouble breaking them with an improved cylinder barrel, or shooting a .410 shotgun for that matter.)

The other method is to use what is affectionately called a "spreader load", where an insert is set into the shot, that looks like a cross, or even a straight divider.

If you decide to use a bare load of Nice Shot, consider lubing the barrel AFTER Seating the OS card, using a cleaning patch lubed with either Ballistol, or wonderlube. I like the way the wax based lubes Stick to the bore, and prevent leading in the barrel better.

Roundball, thanks for the link. Interesting article. I'm going to try some experimenting with FFF too and see what it does.
I compared them both at the range side x side same trip...3F gave me noticeably better patterns than 2F out of my GM Full Jug Choked .20ga

...Are you thinking Nice-shot? Can't think of any other non-toxic shot that would work in this barrel...
Bismuth ought to, but the price isn't much better than NiceShot.

Joel

Thanks Joel..You would think after correcting me this many times I would remember..... :youcrazy:

Just have not made the effort to locate any Bismuth..... :idunno:

"That's been my experience too...several years ago I experimented with making 'paper shot cups' and quickly learned if I seated an empty cup all the way down first, the pressure of the ramrod down on the bottom of the empty paper cup, caused all the sides to tilt inward some...then when I'd pour shot, enough shot would get between the bore walls and the outside of the paper to cause inconsistency...then I'd seat the OS card and it would further crush those tilted paper walls in and I'd get the occasional slug effect or por patterns...so I started loading up at the muzzle."

When foolin' with my 12ga, choked barrel on the New Englander I used paper shotcups. My method was similar to where you ended, pushing a couple of Wonder Wads into the barrel just beyond the choke, inserting the shotcup, adding the shot where I was able to see where it went, and then pushing the whole column down with a single OS card. I didn't use a cushion wad, didn't wipe between shots, and had no leading. My patterns were dense and without holes.

I was using up to 110gr ffg under up to 120gr volume of magnum #6 shot. I know that my paper shotcups should have ruptured during seating and firing, but I didn't notice any leading when cleaning. Lubing the barrel after loading does sound like a good idea, but didn't seem necessary in my 12ga.

I might have put it out of mind, too, except for two things. One is that I like it and I still have the last of my jug of original-production #4's. The other is that I keep talking to Will Bilozir (local distributor for Ballistic Products), mostly at gun shows, and he's been trying since the inventor died to set up, or to arrange for, local production. At the spring show he sounded optimistic again.

Regards,
Joel

Precision Reloading offers 3kg/6.6lb for $159.99 (currently) plus shipping, etc.

Just some food for thought:

Bismuth = $53.40 / kilo(2.2lbs) = $24.28/pound
EcoTungsten (Niceshot) = $60 / kilo(2.2 lbs) - $27.28/pound

Niceshot is only $3 / pound more, and its available is several pellet sizes.

EcoTungsten(Niceshot) is ballistically a direct lead substitute...AND...patterns better / more dense than the Lawrence brand hard magnum, or copper plated, or nickel plated lead out of my Full choke .20ga GM barrel...no shot cup needed and can even be shot in old damascus barreled guns.

Do all your load development with the less expensive corresponding size lead pellets, then take a couple of verification shots with the more expensive non-toxic and go hunting.
