One of the very early .50cal TC Hawken Flintlocks from the mid 70's, pristine condition, long LOP stock, lots of drop, low price...on it's way to me now...

Old style lock...I'll have it fully upgraded 30 minutes after UPS deliveres it.

Roundball your the only guy I know of that can find, stumble across, or scrounge those great deals on T/C's. :applause: Nice looking rifle for 30+ years. How does the bore look? It definitely has more drop, but looks like it has a higher comb than later models. When you get the new lock in lets us know how it shoots.

That's why I like those very early 70's stocks a lot more than the recent year's production...very distinctive looking stock shape and they fit me great which is why I got it...will probably just resell the barrel and a newer, existing stock.

Rifle is on it's way so I haven't seen the bore...it's stated to be perfect and there's a no questions asked return policy so I suspect it's as clean as the rest of the rifle since they know they'll get it right back if it isn't...already have the upgrade parts for the lock on hand.

Were those early barrels 1 in 48 twist? Let me know what the bore looks like, I have yet to put together a T/C flint. I may be interested, I have a Hawken stock I could use. I think I purchased from you.

Good deal RB. I bought my TC 50 cal hawken flintlock in 1975, it's serial number is just under 11,000. The cut on the wrist where it transistions into the comb is not a sharp as the one you have pictured. One of these days I will get around to sending the lock back for the improved one.

I bought mine in 1980, second hand, so it was probably made about the same time as that one. It was a great gun and served me well for years.

Hey Doc...yes, the standard barrels are 1:48"...I'm thinking about the possibility of moving a GM 15/16" x .54cal Flint smoothbore barrel onto this stock.......OR.......GM does make a 15/16" x 38" x .40cal drop-in rifle barrel that would probably be great on this stock too...:hmm: :hmm:

I think they really spent a lot of man-hours on stocks when they started making the Hawken model back in the 70's, and it seems like you can see the design changes every several years, all geared towards being able to automate more and more of the stock making process...as a result I assume they had to get away from a lot of the severe angles and curves...and I believe todays stock production is completely automated on duplicator machines so the end result is a darn near straight piece of wood...from front to back

Nice lookin Hawkin Roundball!
You must have quite a collection of them by now?

Well, I have accumulated some for sure, but I've also been selling off some over the years...within the past few years I've sold off a number of firearms that I came to realize I simply would no longer use since I only hunt with Flintlocks all season.

So I sold off several centerfire rifles and shotguns, and then some caplocks...need to sell some more...if something happened to me, my Wife would get taken to the cleaners trying to sell them...

Have you measured the difference in drop between the 70's style and the current? I was watching a couple of older style stocks on e-bay until the bidding went crazy IMO.

Good buy.

I have always said I would like to get a TC some day, but after pulling them up they just don't fit right. I found that the comb is to high for my liking. But you have some very nice rifles.

You might want to check that barrel when you get it Roundball, those early '70s and earlier T/Cs used G.R.Douglas barrels (serial # up to about 17,000) and had a 1;66 twist.

Yes, I'll be checking when I get my hands on it...the barrel has no TC markings and it has a very low 4 digit S/N...42xx

Rifle arrived...if the photos are a "10", the rifle is a "5"...don't know if it's the lighting or something about the photos but it looks far better in the photos than it does at 3 feet...an awful lot of marks in the srock from bumps and bangs...if it truly looked like it does in the photos it would be pristine, but it is not in very good shape after all.

To make matters worse, while the stock was padded / wrapped inside a larger carton, the barrel was just slid inside the carton, right alongside the thin carboard wall of the carton, and the carton evidently got dropped or hit hard by something because the flat backwall of the rear sight is bent over almost in half.

And while the bore itself is fine, there are a number of scattered patches of rust spots on the barrel's exterior...returning it Monday.

If it's only a 5 in person vs a 10 in pictures I think I'd make a call to the seller and tell him to send the gun depicted in the pictures. Don't know where you bought it or how much (or how little) you paid for it, but if the pics and the real gun don't look the same or the condition is not as verbally described, I'd be plenty hot and want satisfaction. Guess it depends how far you want to go in expressing your dissatisfaction.

Whoops, missed this part of your post. I was too mad for you and didn't read all the way to the end. Good for you.

I'm sorry you were disapointed. A new toy that doesn't meet expectations can really crash a good mood. :( If there's external rust on the finish T/C puts on their guns, it's been badly neglected.
T/C has a fairly tough blue/black job.
Yep. Send it back and better luck next time.

P.S On the way back from the Post Office, get yourself a Kick-A§§ helping of really good icecream. Lots of good endorphines
