That's a very nicely made rifle. It looks like a plain maple stock rather than spalted. Spalting is a form of fungal decay that results is different colors as well as hard and soft spots and is not really suited for a heavy kicker like a 72 caliber. Have fun!

Also try finding a patch and ball combo for shooting harder scrap lead.

And try tapered paper cartridges with hardened balls, cheap shooting. [fast reloads]

Yes, it's pretty much a plain maple stock and the only part that I thought might be spalted is the very end of the butt stock. I'll take a close up of the wood tomorrow.

I didn't even know that they made rifles bigger than .58 caliber, then I found out they make .62 but .72 ! Wow that is a small cannon.
