87 CVA Hawkin .50 cal

Anyone own one from this time period or know much about them?
Are they 1/48 rifling
Someone offered a decent price on one, but didn’t know too much about it & hadn’t shot it or anything

It includes some ball & basic assories & I actually have .50 stuff so could work

Have some .49 ball, Great Plains.50 cal & had 100 of those “ball-connicals” w the hollow base I can’t seem to find that should work well in it

Also, have some .50 cal Thor practice bullets w a plastic sabot I’m not sure about-lead aspect looks .50 cal or close

Have a boat load of hornady XTP .50 sabots where the bullet size is only around .44 cal
Assume the later won’t work if the twist is 1/48?

Or is there a range they would work like under 100 yds?

Got rid of what I bought them for & I’d rather use them, but understand that may be a bad idea

Anyways, what kind of loads connicals ball work well w what u guys have?

What kind of accuracy?

Are CVA Hawkins from the 80’s halfway decent or a hard pass

Appreciate any info experience or tips anyone wants to share

A well cared for CVA Hawken from the 1980's will have a very good Spanish barrel, a relatively acceptable percussion lock, and decent double set triggers. The CVA Rifles with the Spanish barrel will have grooves deep enough for good round ball shooting. It looks more like a Hawken Squirrel Rifle than a Plains Rifle but still a decent rifle.

I don’t recall what they went to in the late 80s but I would have to guess possibly 1:48. My Mountain rifle is one of the early 70s models. People I saw on the range with the newer ones were happy with them.
Don’t shoot anything but prb can’t help you with that issue.
