Afternoon builders, I've managed to get my grubby paws on a slice of burl, and I can't confirm, but the piece pictured might be over 5" thick... it's all in the kiln now for a few weeks, hopefully I'll have it by Christmas. In the meantime I need to allow my mind to wander on what I'm going to make out of it, but also, the best way to section it off, and make best use of it, what do we think? The first photo is probably what I'll end up working with, the other bits are probably going to end up furniture!

Save a nice bit for a powder horn butt plug , or two.
Beautiful Would be great for something like a ky style pistol. But, me being a wood turner I can see several ideas on the lathe for it. Also, small scraps can be used for range rod handles, short starters, knife scales, pens. Let yer mind go nuts.
Well, the burl got back from the sawmill today, seems the dimensions were miscommunicated, the slab is 10" thick and kiln dried. Not sure what I'm going to do with it, but I might be able to squeak a half stock out of it
Git out the Epoxie , and brown tint Epoxie stain , band saw her out , and have at it. When I was called in to work at a mid town hospital in Johnstown , Pa. , at lunch time , we would walk through the city park to a restaurant . The park had many ancient Black Maples. On the trunks of these giants were bushel basket size growths. I would have loved to have run one of them across a saw mill blade. Guaranteed , there would have been a fabulous burl butt stock or two , inside.
