so i spent another afternoon at my favorit place, the gun range!

as usual i probably fired about 40+ shots and let at least a half dozen other people at the range shoot my gun (im always trying to recruit for our hobby). the other muzzleloading shooter at the range couldnt figure out why his gun (Lyman GPR) weighed so dang much but my gun of similer size weighed at least 3 pounds less. the balance and weight of this gun has been unmatched so far.

edit: i wanted to mention that Jim Chambers early germanic locks are outstanding! super fast and seem to give flints outstanding life. ive used the same flint in this gun for the last 4 trips to the range which means the flint has now fired between 120 and 150 shots! the rock looks all buggered up now but still seems to want to spark.

here are some targets from the range:

4 shots, 80 grains KIK FF, .020 denim patch, cabelas BP lube:

4 shots, 80 grains KIK FF, .018 ox-yoke prelubed ticking:

5 shots, 80 grains KIK FFF, .020 denim patch, cabelas BP lube:

5 shots, 80 grains KIK FFF, .018 ox-yoke prelubed ticking:

looks like ill be trying two things on my next range trip. first im gonna try a lighter load of FFF to see if i can get better groups. second, ill play around with the 80 grain FF with denim groups some more cause if i can keep groups like that im sold!

What position are you shooting from?

It seems that you have the traditional "flint lock flinch", pulling things to the right. In my case if I haven't shot for awhile they're usually at 4:00.

Thats some good shooting! I use 70grns. of KIK for target an hunting and a .22 pillow ticking patch with mink oil or Hoppe's no.9. I use a rest for my shooting, Don't have the back strength to shoot off hand. :( So I think your will be pleased with 70grns.

i think the 80 grain load of 2F is pretty solid but an even thicker patch might be a good idea. now a 70 grain load of 3F might also work pretty well. i need to hit the fabric store again and see what i can find. i am worried that these lighter loads wont be able to reach out to 100 yards without a ton of drop (my front sight cannot be filed any more). i was hopen for 90-100 grain loads but those seem to really botch up accuracy. i keep haven trouble burning threw patches even with the light loads like 70 grains of 2F. that 4 shot group that looks great still burned threw every patch.

as for flinching, im sure i do it a little but im pretty used to rocklocks by now. the gun shoots right no matter who shoots it. i just need to adjust the sights a little. ill worry about windage once i get my groups constant.

oh yea and im shooting from a bench with sand bags.

Yea, thats what I meant, 70grns of 3fff it's what I use.

how are your 50 yard shots compared to your 100 yard shots with that light load?

Well, I don't consider it a light load, but between 50 an 70 yards it's pretty accurate around 2 inches or so on a good day. I haven't shot it at 100yrds yet but I'll get around to it someday. Btw I do use a 1/8th inch over powder wad. It tightened my groups by at least an inch. I shoot a 33 inch .50 cal. Green Mountain barrel with a 1/72 twist.
