I just recieved a copy of the 2005 Spring Shooting Supplies from SHOOTER'S .
On page 12 they are offering a TRADITIONS ".50 cal precussion gun with a real wood stock for $119.97 + shipping. (Members price is $107.97)

This gun is called a "Springfield Hawken Rifle" and does not have a Set Trigger.
It has a 28 inch barrel with a 1:48 twist. Hooked breech for easy barrel removal and no patch or cap box.

I think this is one of the "made in Spain" guns which is similar to the old CVA Hawken rifle.
If so, it doesn't have bells and whistles, it is a plain SideLock precussion gun using a side Drum rather than a Patent Breech but for a starter gun into this great sport of Muzzleloading, it will (IMO) work great.

If it is like the old CVA low cost gun it will shoot very accuratly with the right load.
The trigger pull may be a little rough.
In it's favor, it does not have that UGLY adjustable rear sight the old CVA gun had. It shows a simple U notch sight (which most people would rather have anyway.)

"Shooters" gives the part number as AX5A-90224
The website given on the catalog is

www.sportsmansguide.com

:) :)
By the way, I tried the link and it works. If you enter AX5A-90224 into the little search window at the site it will take you right to it.
Again, I'm not trying to sell you anything but I've tried site links before that didn't work, or the "deal" didn't exist and I thought I would save you the trouble of checking it out. :)

Zonie,

Thank you for posting that information. They are now sold out, but before they sold out, I told a non internet active friend about it and he ordered one. It showed up this week and he is tickled pink with it. It is his first black powder gun and he is all excited about it and is driving all over the place getting the odds and ends together to shoot it. It looks like I will have a hunting buddy for the muzzleloader season next year!

Regards, :redthumb:

Pork Chop,
Thats the way to go!!
Hold on to that buddy!!!
ARILAR :: :thumbsup:

Arilar,

You got that right! He called me today and was just amazed that a cleaning jag works. All that he has known is centerfires and the cleaning kits he has all have the eyes for the patches. The jag concept was new to him, but he was pleased that it works!

Neat having someone nearby that I can chat with and get excited with over the most silly stuff about these weapons. Will be fun to hunt with them... ::

It's great to know that someone new is joining the Muzzleloading fraternity. It's always good to have a friend that enjoys the same things you do.

It's too bad they are sold out, but hopefully the started with a bunch of them so there should be a bunch of new users.
Maybe they will even find our web site and join it!! ::
