Thinking about making a simple flapped holster for Walker pretty much following the design of the one worn by the young Californian in the well-known circa 1850 Daguerreotype. I have reversed it so we see the two men shaking with their right hands. Holster has a square throat, contoured seam and strap closure as noted by Rattenbury in "Packing Iron," but I will likely pass on this particular style of open toe, never having cared much for having the muzzle hang beyond the leather.

I have a RH crossdraw slim jim on an 1851 Calvary officer's belt to carry mine. The shoulder strap caries the weight and it's quite comfortable, saves a lot of wear and tear on my back. I sometimes include the 1850 cap pouch and a pistol cartridge box.

Got started on the holster yesterday. Today, I will add the keeper for the strap and sew on the belt loop in the back, then glue the edges preparatory to stitching. I am using 6-7 ounce vegetable tanned cowhide as that is all I had on hand. Should be fine.

Bill, I hadn't looked closely at the photo but if you enlarge it quit a bit you will see that the holster is a full flap with a loop on the outside for the tab on the flap to tuck into. The flap is turned back and tucked between the holster and his body. In all the times I had seen that picture over the years I had never really looked close at the holster.

Hawkeye, that's the design I was going for. Have to confess the molded and dried holster is sitting on the counter, waiting to the tab to be cut and sewn in, and the belt loop on the back as well before gluing and stitching the whole shebang closed.
There's a fresh jar of vinegaroon cooking out in the garage for this thing.
