When I take my Flint to the range I sometimes run low/out of FFFFg in my priming flask right at the end. I don't want to lug a pound of FFFFg with me & I don't want to run short. FFFFg in a regular flask seems unwise. I just need one refill of the priming flask (one tablespoon full or so) I was thinking a small glass jar :idunno:

Any one else had & solved this?

I never had that problem since I don't shoot flint but I have some small containers some shooter use to premeasure powder like for revolvers. They are the size of a very small pill bottle and glass. Sounds like what you need or maybe an old pill bottle would work. I like having backups myself because I hate running out of anything.

I have a small priming horn myself 25 shots worth or so I have a 3 grain priming valve on it. Its different and smaller than my regular horn. I use 3fff as my prime because down here 4fg will turn to soup in your pan.

Sean,,if you need something let me know,I will send you some short little buggers

Never use a glass container for powder or primers - very bad idea :nono: .

Sean, I have shot flinters for more decades than I am willing to admit to anymore.
I have a number of small priming flasks and other devices. I can't recall ever emptying one of these. I use only about 3 grains of 4Fg per shot and all my priming devices hold more than a days worth of shooting. Maybe you are overpriming. Your right and choice, of course. But, IMHO, unnecessary and wasteful. You might try changing your priming techniques. And/or carry extra priming powder in a separate container. And/or do like I do at the range, carry two, three or four extra priming gizzies along with all the other unneeded 'stuff' I lug to the range.

Lets see. I have two brass primers and one is large enough to hold considerably more than the smaller one. The larger is fine for the range as I've never emptied it in one session. The other is much smaller and my choice for the woods where enough prime for 50 shots isn't needed. My third one was made for me from a deer leg bone and walnut; it's a thing of beauty. It was a gift from a member on another forum. This one doesn't measure and you just pour the correct amount in the pan and replace the stopper.

But I'm OCD so in my range box is a small vial of 4F in case the worst happens.

I just prime with 2ff so I circumvent the whole dual horns thing.

Yep - I simply use FFFg for both the main charge and for priming (.50cal), aka: K.I.S.S. .

In over 6 years of so doing, I've never experienced any difference in either ignition or accuracy.

I'm another one that just primes from my main horn with the same 3f that I use for the main charge.

Well you all have given me a lot to think on.

I use http://www.trackofthewolf.com/Categories/PartDetail.aspx/73/1/FLASK-PP-3

I think I get twenty some odd shots out of it. I'm kind of new to flints I have not tried fffg or ffg for priming.

I use 3fg for both the main load and as the prime with my .50 cal rifles. Works great. The 4f is a bit faster burning but the difference is so small it has to be measured with scientific instruments to discern the difference. Really no need to carry a separate powder granulation for priming in my opinion.
