Nicely done. I'm doing some experimentation on just the reverse. Rather than darkening the stock with a torch, I'm "lightening" stripes with markers that will resist darker stain. Reason? I could not get the wires tight enough around the carvings to make the stripes look authentic and run through the carving as it would on real wood. Here are progress photos. I learned a GREAT DEAL on how to significantly improve on my next build.

Thanks guys.

Did you strip the finish before striping it?

Yes. I used the Citristrip so often mentioned. Twice. Plus some sanding. The wood was not near as dark as our walnut.

First coat was Miniwax special walnut, which looked nothing like the sample at Ace and was light with an orange tint. I followed that with Jacobean, which did add some darkness to the wood. I was thinking that I should have used the Jacobean first, but I ended up liking the way it came out.
Followed up with some Danish oil.
