A new .32, or a 2nd .58?

First, I LOVE my .40 flintlocks and am going to have a third .40 flinter built before end-of-year 2012. So I contemplate my next flinter...should I get a .32 or .58 flintlock? I have a .58 fusil de chasse and am waiting for the CLA show in KY to look .58 'Jaeger's.' A short-barrelled rifle would be easier to hunt with in NE Ohio than my longrifle. Now I am thinking about a .32 flintlock for fun and squirrels instead.

Has anyone else faced a similar dilemma? What choice did you make? Why? And did you have any regrets?

get a .32

 

With the right load the .40 is as good as the .32, for small game, but falls way short on the performance of a .58. What I'm trying to say is that it can be loaded down to a .32, but not up to a .58. It's completely at the other end of the spectrum.

If a .40 is legal for squirrels where you live then I'd just use one of those instead of getting a .32 rifle.
But if I really had my heart set on a .32 I'd see if it's not too late to change my order on that 3rd .40
If I were going to get a Jaeger it would be a .62 or larger instead of a .58
Since I'm real partial to the .54 and you don't have one I'd get a .54 longrifle.
Sounds like you really need a pistol.

well i have 45 rifles now have 45 and 50 single shot pistols
62 and 75 cal smoothies
and when i searing for a new smoke pole i going 36 or 32 depending one what i can afford when i find it
now you may ask why jsut coz i dont haveone and noone else who shot Bp doesent either except in revolver
and my second reason is my gal little and she is not comfy shooting the big bores

I was specing-out a 42" X 13/16" barrel for the .32. I figured it would be more like sniping rather than stalking, therfore the long barrel.

And now my next request...please post solid referrals on quality kits, or where to go for pieces-parts. :thumbsup:

I enjoy my .32. It's got a 42" 3/4"atf Rayl barrel. I can shoot ALL day, without burning up alot of powder or using alot of lead. Like shooting a .22 rimfire only more fun!

I agree with pigslayer. I've gotten several nice pieces of wood(precarved stocks) from Pecatonica. I've also purchased a lot of parts, supplies, and tools from Track of the Wolf. They ship fast and the order always arrives complete and correct.

Saw a beautiful .32 flinter on Tracks website, although it was already sold.

The builder of that .32 flinter contact me and we have been discussing a .32 flinter built to my wants. :grin:

After I attend the CLA show, I'll have a better idea of what I want the .32 to look like.

Recently on Track's for-sale menue, I saw a beautiful .58 Jeager.

My plan is to get both built and make MY Christmas Merry! :grin:

It all depends on what your priorities are. The .40 is a good squirrel caliber but is on the upper end of the best calibers for squirrels. The .32 is an excellent squirrel caliber. You didn't say what your use for the .58 was. Of course, if you are looking at a .58 just because you want a .58, then that is all the justification anyone needs for buying it. Just decide what you want and why you want it and then make your decision.

I am in contact with two builders. One is building a .32 flinter in a So. Mountian style for squirreling and I hope crow. The other is building a .58 English Sporting Rifle with some changes that I want for deer (in my case trees :redface: )

Next year I'll probably have my final rifle - .40 flint Early Lancaster style built.
