I don't believe those blue jean selvages are the same as the old lists. Think about what would be involved in making gun cases or slippers from those 1/4' -1/2" modern selvages.

June 23, 1768 James and Drinker delivered to Baynton, Wharton and Morgan:

“10 Chests each containing 30 French guns with neat blue & Gilt Barrels & List cases is 300 Guns (at 32 shillings a piece)"

Have you searched for various upholstery webbing or binding tapes? I think they are woven with a selvedge weave and perhaps would be similar.

The problem is they come in a lot of different materials and thicknesses. One might assume the colonial "list" may have come in different materials/thicknesses as well, depending on what fabric it came from.

Upholstery webbing is available in jute, for example. I don't know where else you would get jute that was woven that tight. Other webbing and tapes are available in cotton or linen.

I found a few various types by doing a google search.

Yes, you bring up a good point, there probably are other things which might be similar to the list mentioned by Page. They probably would work about the same, too, I would imagine.

I'm not looking for any, I have no interest in testing them, it's only the historical aspect which caught my eye.

Spence, noticed that your list of wadding, does not include paper wasp or hornets' nest. I remember a few old timers talking about "harvesting" hornet's nests on frosty mornings for use as depression shotgun wadding.

Yeah, no hornet's nest. I've been looking for a historic reference to hornet's nest for 20 years, have never found one that qualifies. The only one I've found is from 1896 and in a tale in a sportsman's magazine which is very likely fiction.

If anyone has such a reference I'd certainly like to have it.

Maybe back then the traits of "list" lent it's moniker to heavier fabric.
So now I need to try some of the canvas patch material for shot gunning.

Gosh it does not help that both list and listing just get you lists of cloth :haha: I tried googling it 4 or5 ways and never did find a photo of list. I did find lasting and worsted lasting, but Nary a list on the lasting did I find. :(

Google's algorithm chooses the most common use of the search term first....
Using an alternate term or a different language will often get you the results you are looking for....Many languages have fewer words than English.
Google's algorithm also sorts answers based on your previous selections...Narrowing your choice of answers even further....

Also keep in mind that "list" part of a larger product and not a product itself.
