Howdy folks. Two feathers here:
Here's a day hunt powder horn I just finished last night. I figured I'd show it off and see what y'all think?
It started out Greenish Gray/White, but I wanted it more Brown rustic. So I antiqued it and put on a few coats of paste wax. It has a Curly Maple cap and spout plug. I added one of my threaded inserts to make it easier to fill. The Acorn finial and leather gasket hides the insert so the PC/HA crowd won't lynch the owner.:~))) No one will know if you don't tell 'em.
I put on an adjustable 3/4" wide 5oz. Veg tanned strap with forged buckle. The strap is all hand stitched and the horn has a hand forged strap staple.
Check it over. I showed it to a few guys and they really like it.
I make more in the future, but for now, I think I'm done until Summer?

Thank you very much. I was beginning to think people just didn't like my work? :~)))
It's very Chocolate Brown on top and has a gorgeous shine. It almost looks "plastic" if you see it in person. It started out kind of Greenish/White.
Here's what the horn looked like before I did my thing. This IS NOT the same horn but it's almost exactly what it looked like before I started.
I have some other people interested in it, if the sale would fall through. It was a commissioned work. I'm not a craftsman or a horn artist. There are some outstanding horners here, I'm not one of them. I make working horns not artistic lookers or hangers.:~))) Not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just not me.

I’m not a huge fan of the acorn finial, although it does make filling easier. I do like the basic shape of the horn and the color you chose to stain it. I also really like the octagon spout shape. Good job all in all.

My deepest apologies for the Acorn, but those have been my "signature" approach to finials and ball bag plugs for a very long time. Perhaps one day I'll find a new approach to my finials?

For myself, I like the acorn finial. I made a horn over forty years ago. The horn came right from the slaughter house. It still had the core and was off the animal for maybe four or five hours. When it came to making the end plug, I turned a piece of maple. To make filling the horn easier, I turned an acorn finial plug. It’s just pressure fit into the base. I have been thinking about a threaded brass insert over the years, and modify the acorn to fit. I also turned a smaller acorn for the spout plug.
