Lots of posts here on the forum about ball extraction for various reasons. One big reason " I forgot the powder".
Everyone has there favorite measure and mine is an adjustable brass one with attached funnel.
Now for the tip: I measure the powder and pour in the barrel, leaving the measure/funnel inserted in the muzzle. When you have the ball and are ready to place on the muzzle, you intantly know the powder is there.

I've written before about the benefit of having a physical cue to tell of the steps that have been taken during the loading procedure. @Larry (Omaha)'s cue of the funnel of his measure in the barrel is a good indication that powder has been poured. I leave the funnel in the barrel to show that powder has been poured. At the bench, I have a small ball starter that will stay in the barrel to indicate a ball has been loaded. I know, I can see the short started patched ball. I will leave the short starter in the barrel until I have the loading rod in my hands. I have marks on my loading rod to indicate that the ball is seated on the powder.
