A striking piece of curly maple...

Very nice. I have yet to figure out how figure grading is done. On my rifle I am building now from a TOTW kit I ordered the "extra fancy" grade thinking I would get something like that but it ended up being very little curl on one side down the forearm.

Im no authority...it does seem like there are a few different grading scales depending on who you're dealing with...TVM calls this:
Super Premium + +
I've heard others refer to grades numerically...ie; grade 5, grade 6, etc.

(I had a .54cal smoothbore with a 42" barrel built out of the other half of the same plank, using a reddish stain).

That buck looks so contemplative... like he's thinking... "hmmm... nice wood"! :rotf:

Seriously, if I ever have another gun built (I've been thinking about replacing my three flinters with a Christian Oerter smoothbore), I'm going for the best curly maple the builder can muster up. I love it!

Talked to a guy at TVM this afternoon. They don't have an actual shop but they're gonna let me come in sometime in the next week or so and look at the guns on the "showroom" part of the website. They've got a really nice late Lancaster and a TN Poor Boy but they're both 50's and I really want to end up with a .58 or .62. Just might have pics of my own TVM rifle in about 12 months.
