When deer hunting and you come upon a handsome multi pointed buck in the act of mating do you take ready advantage of his distraction and fire your killing round
OR
\\in an act of compassion for a fellow male, you hold off till he is walking around congratulating himself as the coolest buck in the woods?

I'd blast the doe.

I can't eat horns, we have a high limit on does (10 per year), and the doe is tastier than an old buck.

Besides, he keeps his group of does in my area, and might gather more..., and those does might attract younger bucks too...., shoot the big fellow and the harem scatters, and no telling where they will end up, and no young upstarts looking to get in a "quickie" for me to harvest if I so choose. The harem might stay close to where I hunt because they are used to that area, OR might get swept up by the neighborhing buck or divided among younger bucks, and moved off the area where I hunt. I like to leave the "old boy" alone

LD, I’m put in mind of the old story of the eighty year old getting married to a twenty year old. People asked if he was worried about heart problems and possible death on his wedding night. He answered “well I speckt it could be a problem, but if she dies she dies”.

I suppose trying to nail a deer with your car could create collateral damage. A rifle is better because it is easier to sneak around trees with one.

Just a thought.

Once dropped a nice doe with my trusty Model '83.

Now the old Tyme reenact ors will insist you drop your next doe with a Model T or , loosening up their standards a Model A.

I learned to drive in a model A but there were no deer in the streets and roads of Omaha.
