Also off topic but I heard that a study determined that Absinthe caused strange reactions that were based on the educational level of the person drinking it.

They found that people who had not finished high school became totally lethargic after drinking 4 ounces of it in a one hour time limit.

People who had achieved a Masters Degree drinking the same amount in an equal length of time had a compelling desire to wash their cloths.

From these findings they decided
"Absinthe makes the smart go launder".

Yes it is. It was made legal a couple of years ago. Before that you could order it over the internet and have it delivered. It was legal to own, but not to sell in the USA. Now they can sell it in the USA but it's still hard to find good absinthe.

I like two brands that are very good. One is Une Emile 68. It's a French absinthe and is very tasty and a good mixing of wormwood and anise.

The second brand is Clandestine. It's a blue absinthe from a Swiss maker.

There are others but these are the two I like from the ones I have tried.

I have also tried La Tormente (sp?), Lucid, and a couple of others I can't remember the names of. Stay away from the Spanish, German and Checz brands. They are usually high amounts of alcohol with a little wormwood (not always) and anise flavor. So anise flavored vodka is what they really are. Use the French method of prepairing the absinthe and stay away from the Checz method as setting the absinthe on fire burns off the alcohol and ruins the flavor of the absinthe.

Use ice cold water slowly dripped into the absinthe and it will come out very tasty.

I order mine from a place in the UK called Liquor's De France. They guarantee it will be delivered. They have a great selection. If you look in your local liquor store you might happen across a bottle. Here in my state the liquor stores must buy their items from the state and this limits any good absinthe from being sold. So if I want the really good brands I have to buy from the net and pay a lot more for shipping.

I only do this once in a few years.

Sorry for taking this off topic, but here is the URL of Liquor's De France. http://www.absintheonline.com/

Sounds good. I'll need to check that one out.

I've got a good link somewhere for users to review the various brands of absinthe. If I can find it I'll post the link here.

Interesting. I had a bottle from France via UK which I threw away -- had stuff suspended in it you could plainly see. Besides, it wasn't an especially well regarded brand so down the drain it went.

Alden, sediment or floaters are not necessarily a bad thing. Many aged wines, rums and other spirited beverages will develop this. In most cases it just means that they have been made naturally and not ultra filtered or have been clarified by artificial means. Over time suspended solids drop out and some coalesce. I have 30 year old wines from South Africa that have high amounts of sedimentation and floaters. After I let the wine breathe I filter through a coffee filter and they are mighty tasty. Oh, and I’m kind of a wine and beer snob.

Judge not till thy beverage passes thy lips.

was'nt absinthe vincent van gogh's drink of choice?
seems he wound up cutting an ear off and mailed it to a lover that rejected him.

If that’s real I would love a link if not it was a great chain yank.

Ha! light bulb just came on even funnier.

The problem with the spirit may be due to it's popularity beginning in the late 1800's. Like gin, it's a distillation capturing botanicals. So different absinthe makers will have different combinations of these botanicals, AND thus distillation for these makers depends on the availability of the ingredients.

In short, quality absinthe has a limited supply.

As popularity increased, the availability of "good" versions of the drink may have become a problem, so Enter The Fakers.

Folks may have made "absinthe" with very poor attention to distillation, to get in on the market demand, and to increase profits. To stretch and flavor poorly distilled alcohol, they would employ the addition of not so potable ingredients... just as happened with gin, and later with bourbon and rum. These adulterants, with the addition of a little methanol (wood alcohol) from bad distilling, are what probably contributed to the bad rep of absinthe. For example, it was banned in the US in 1915...LONG before prohibition took effect... long before the Roaring '20's and folks like Hemingway made the drink famous in the US.

Some years ago I was on the Audubon National Wildlife Refuge in North Dakota, discussing fire management of a native prairie. There was Absinthe (wormwood) growing there, a weed. I pulled some out with my bare hands and had an allergic reaction that resulted in a rash on my fingers that lasted almost a year. I wouldn't want to drink it. It caused some bad problems in New Orleans in the late 1800s with people who drank it.

I wonder if it was the "right" wormwood, as there are five types, and only two are used for Absinthe, and of those two only one is "naturalized" to North America, while two of the other wormwoods are found in North America, but are not the right type for a beverage.

It's not easy being green...

...and I'm not taking chances with waves of crap in my mind-altering beverages, thank you very much.
