I'd like to know what kind of group's ya'll get at 100 yards.I know a guy who is satisfied with grouping 6 rounds in a 5-6 inch circle at that range.is it possible to do better than that?I'm very interested in knowing what all of you have experienced in trying to shoot straight.

The limiting factor is the sights. I have had 2 1/2" groups at 100 yards using a reciever sight and the small hole. Most sights on muzzleloaders are not made for precise work. Years ago, I put a 9 power scope on a cheep old CVA Blaser and put all balls in a hole only slightly bigger than 1/2" at 50 yards. I have a clamp on scope mount for muzzleloaders and I may just put it on my new Trade rifle to see what it really will do.

I too would like to test with a scope for accuary, on a T/C hawkins or renengade. Where can I get a mount for tempory use ? Have fox ridge, and googled.

With round ball I expect cloverleaf at 50m and 2 inches at 100m. I do use aperture rear sights however.

I picked up the mount at a gun show. It just fits over the barrel and then you tighten up the set screws. Sorry, I don't know where they are made.

would any of you think it possible to get 1/4-1/2 in groups with a T/C hawken open sights at 100 yrds?

Yes,If measured from center to center. Not impossible, just improbably. odds 1 in 100xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. Even worse than selling a scope mounted inline in our calassified.

a clamp on scope mount would be flippin' awesome when working up a load for a new rifle :hmm: . I want one!!!

I get 2.5"-3" groups off the bench with open iron sights. That's about as good as my eyes can see at that distance. The front sight covers one of those 3" dayglow stickers at that distance so I'm just getting a "sunset" picture centered on the front sight.

I average 2" groups with PRB with my CVA .50, 24" barrel primitive sights. Really good day better than that, this is 50 yds. At 100 I can put 'em all on the 'hump' of a foam 8" plate. Some may say that ain't great but it has made deer meat many times. Only once did I have to track a deer far, I got him little too far back and he went about 1/4 mile, I shot him again when I found him laid down in thicket. He left blood trail after about 100 yds.

Hi Iwent to the range newyears day and clover leafed prb. with my .50 hawkens T/C using bumbling bear grease T/C bore butter and Hoppies #9 gun oil, at 50 yrds and got about 2-3 inch grops with bumbling bear grease and T/C borebutter,100 yrds I use between 85 & 90 grns of ffg goex. Maby I got lucky. ( this is from a bench rest). Fisherking. :v

I don't know about you guys, Or if you have even noticed. When shooting at longer ranges, it helps to have a small target, VERY SMALL.

At 100 yards, I have a 2" Black Square that I shoot at. If I don't keep them inside that 2" black square, I know that I have to bear down more and I must be getting sloppy.

It also helps to eat your carrots and blacken your sights.

Like Mel Gibson said, Aim Small, Miss Small.

Lyman GPR .54 cal percussion and PRB - off cross sticks with open (stock) sights I can and have shot 3 1/4" - 3 shot group at 100 yards. My eyes are getting old and can barely see a 3" dot on the target at that range. If I can do that, I know a good shooter can do much better . . .

Find a few of the older Dixie catalogs they used to offer the clampon scope mounts. They fit octagon barrels only with a magnet on the top flat. The last one I saw also had a velcro strap around the scope and rifle.
Only used mine with target loads in .45 don't know how well they would work with hunting loads in larger caliber guns. Hope you fine one.
Accuracy at 100yds 4 to 6 inches is good, the best I have done was 5 shots covered by a silver dollar a lot of years ago. Most of the guns made today would probably do 2" if we could load and see to hold them but few of us can.
Fox :hatsoff:

PRB, open sights, no wind, from a bench rest I'm not happy unless the groups are 4" or less. More than that and I know I've still gotta keep working on my loads.

My Mowrey 50 puts them into 1/2" holes ALL DAY LONG! It's the 2nd and 3rd shots that tend to open my groups :rotf: !

OK now, to be serious, as the other poster mentioned, in theory it is possible as groups are correctly measured via the variation of each shot's impact center, so one could indeed have a 1/4" group from 50cal PRBs.

Now, to do so at 100 yards? :shocked2:

You should be shootin' for the US Olympic Team!

Mowery50,

Just for the record . . . If the 1/4" group you refer to is in reference to my post, well, let's just say it is unfortunate that there is a space between the 3 and the 1/4 and it occurs at the end of a line of text. I should have completely written it out as "three and one quarter" inch group. I can't shoot 1/4" groups off the bench at 10 yards . . .

Not in reference to you or your shooting at all sir :v !

I was only trying to clarify that when using the correct method for group measurements, the caliber is of zero consequence.

Someone else earlier asked if it was possible and others corrected stated "possible but not very likely". My open comment (kidding) was to anyone that could shoot 1/4" groups @ such yardage.
