Recently I came into a .50 caliber rifle marked with a Spanish proof load '700 Kp/cm2 K`2'. Having a rotted bore, I had it bored out to .58 cal. smoothbore. My question for our learned gentry is what would be a safe 24ga maximum load of 3fg and shot or buckshot? Patched ball? Thanks in advance, Geo.

How thick is the barrel? . You’ve taken .04 of steel away.
Max loads don’t really matter. In a .58 your best performance will come below 120 grain charge, probably in the 90 grain range.
Sam Falada shot his ‘bag fail Hunter, a sporterized Zouave with a 600+ grain minnie and 110 grains 3 f.

Maximum load recommendations depend a lot on what game is being hunted. With a 24 gauge, we can go to our General Muzzle Loading section and look at the Smoothbore loads sticky. While the GOEX PDF linked in the table doesn't have information on a 24 gauge, interpolation between the 28 and 20 gauge would indicate a charge of 60 to 70 grains of 2fg powder and 5/8 to 3/4 of an ounce of shot.

Remember, your smooth bore is a muzzle loader. Maximum / magnum type loads are often unproductive. You need to to determine a good, effective load for your 24 gauge smooth bore.

I have seldom found maximum loads to be as good as loads under the maximum in both rifles and shotguns. I have a Spanish made 28 gauge that shoots a nice pattern with killing power for rabbits and pigons out to 45 yrds, with 7/8 ounce shot and 55 grain FF which is a light 20 gauge load.
