It is fall turkey season, goose season, squirrel season, dove season, and several others. I have been taking afternoon walks with my shotgun just hunting. Not hunting anything specific, just hunting. The only concession to the turkey season is that I am using a little hotter load than I normally would for this type of hunting, and I am loading with number fives. At 70/100, it still isn't too bad to shoot. Today I bent the barrel before going out to correct where it hits, so I did a few stump shooting type shots getting used to how it is shooting now. I saw squirrels cutting hickories, but never got a good shot. I saw two deer busting off thru the woods after they saw me first. I saw a bunch of doves and actually hit one! The number fives don't make for a very wide dense pattern, so doves are kind of a challenge with this load. In fact, this load shoots too tight for anything but turkey really, so I added some mixed shot to the bag late in the walk. It is simply nice to get out in the woods with no pressure to do anything but enjoy being there. Tomorrow I am going to slip out early and try to actually clobber a turkey! I may take my exercise walk later in the day just to relax tho! Anyone else just getting out there and enjoying the fall weather?
