Can anyone point me in the direction of available hard cases approved for air travel for longrifles with 42-44 inch barrels ? Has anyone built hard cases for longrifles ? Looking for ideas for buying or building cases. Thanks

Cabella's has a case 62" long for $270. 62" seems to be the longest standard case made and my 44" barrel fowler will not fit & the 42" .50 is too tight a fit for my comfort.

Three suggestions for the longer guns:

A custom made case - get what you want/need but at a price.

Sportsman's Guide has surplus Stinger missile cases - might hold as many as 4 guns (I think it is 14"x14"). Weighs 53 lbs empty so it will cost plenty to send - might be a viable option if a group is going somewhere.

Crate the gun & ship it by UPS & avoid both the airport hassle & cost. (There is a thread on the forum re doing this if you think it might work for you).

Let us know if you find a better solution - :idunno:

I just got one of these. Great deal for $34 delivered. http://www.amazon.com/Plano-Vertic...e=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1270248682&sr=1-1

There are places for two locks and both must be locked for TSA.

Looks like a good deal if you gun is short enough to fit. The ad says guns up to 50" but a 42"-44" barrel on a longrifle/fowler will translate to a gun 60" & over (mine are 60" & 62").

Thanks for the suggestions, the Cabelas case may be the ticket, or the Kalispell. The last build I did, a Haines style , I shortened the barrel from 38 inches to 35.5 so it would fit in my SKB case. It is the rifle I take back to PA for flintlock season. However, have some 42 inchers that need a case.

Which one do you have? the black powder version or the 50cal rifle version (a bit wider)

I bought one of the Cabela's "Bullet Proof" One Black-Powder Rifle Cases 7 years ago. I don't know about the "bullet proof" part (I have never shot at the case) but it sure is rugged and lockable. 62" long x 4 1/2" deep and 12" wide will accommodate my Lancaster with a 42" barrel with room to spare. With judicious placement and some extra padding, you can fit two in the case. I will say, I have not yet traveled by airplane with this case . . .

I will tell you this about that...
I went out and bought one of them cases. Took my firelock to the airport.

I had no problem with TSA or the airline. They put it right on. However... The oversize, over weight charges costed more than MY ticket. I couldhave bought a new gun for what it cost to send it on the plane. Literally !!

Now... I UPS my firelock to where i am going and its there when i get there. Costs about 30.00

Probably never use the case again.

Mike: How do you pack your gun for shipping via UPS? Getting the gun there is one thing. Getting it there in one piece is quite another, NO?

Don't fly and buy two.
