Is there a maker of a case that would fit a Brown Bess musket, and a few accessories, that I can transport on an airline?
A fishing case or ski case or ???? whatever will work.

I travel i barrowed a large modern lockable case declaired it a firearm as i had 1 1/4 lb of powder stashed away in it
Didnt have any issues

I never really thought there was such a thing. I've seen stuff tossed around by those gorillas looks like it was at the Somme. Believe they can unravel a cannon ball if you just leave them alone at it a couple minutes! :shocked2:

I was going to suggest a length of heavy steel tubing with a foam packing, but it occurred to me that they'd probably try to use it as a pry bar.

A bit off on a tangent, but putting the powder in the case with the gun is probably a "No No".

That is true! I was not suggesting luggage as an alternative.

in fact there is no legal way to transport BP on a commercial flight that I know of.

You can have loaded ammunition in checked luggage. At least I did last year and I know for a fact that TSA went COMPLETELY thru that piece of luggage. They did find a can of raft patching glue in the same luggage and called me before boarding to say they had to remove it and what did I want them to do with it? I opted to have it discarded. They never mentioned the two boxes of 45-70 ammo right next to it.

We fly with guns and ammo a fair amount, and generally loaded ammo can be carried if properly packed. After reading and complying, I always make a hard copy of the current TSA rules and airlines rules, and take them with me. They do vary a little between airlines. You might be surprised how often you run into folks who don't know their own rules.

Just a couple of weeks ago someone posted about using PVC sewer pipe, cut, capped and filled with foam.

You cannot fly with gun powder, only loaded cartridges in proper packaging.

I am pretty sure that was satx who posted that idea. I have never seen PVC pipe big enough in any of the "Big Box" stores such as Home Depot or Lowe's but, perhaps a plumbing supply store may carry some that is big enough. If you can find it, it would do the job and be a LOT cheaper than a special made case. You might want to send a PM to satx to find out where he got his PVC from and to get his directions for the best way to make the end cap lockable as required by TSA. Oh and don't forget that the lock must be one that is approved by TSA.

I used a common plastic wal mart grade lockable case and had no problems. Length can be an issue since many of our rifles are not readily taken down. Mine fit nicely in two pieces since it is hooked breech. Was also plenty of room for a 1911.

Can you fly on US airlines with loaded ammo like 50-100, that uses black powder and conventional primers?

Guessen i got lucky that time
Anyway anyone if you can ship a new 1lb can to yourself for pickup at the otherend

You can legally carry ammo loaded with smokeless powder in a checked bag separate from your firearm. You can save yourself a lot of trouble by just not telling them that your ammo has black powder in it. If you say that your ammo is loaded with black powder, you will not be able to take it. The less said, the better.

Do not have the references in front of me, but when researching the potential ways to get black powder to Africa last year it was obvious that you do not want to attempt to get black powder on an airline under any circumstances. Black powder loaded in a rifle cartridge or shotgun shell will bring all kinds of felony hell down on you. TSA now asks where your powder is when they realize you are checking a muzzleloader. Wasted nearly an hour even with documentation from my outfitter that I would be getting my powder in Africa.

DO NOT attempt to fly with black powder in any form.
