Bought this Fowler this weekend. Any info would be great. J p moore lock, 53 inch British proof barrel, maple stock.

Hi,
We really need better photos in good light showing the marks and more of the gun. Despite the tag, it is most definitely not pre-Rev War. The lock suggests the late 1790s or early 1800s. The trigger guard is Dutch. It would be good to see the barrel proof marks. I am guessing they will be Birmingham, which means post 1813 but they might also be Tower proofs or London proofs. The maple stock could be made anywhere but the Dutch influence might suggest somewhere in or near NY.

It appears to be a parts gun. I think the guard is earlier than the lock or barrel or buttplate. By this time, styles were blending, so pinning down where it was made other than “the Northeast” is difficult.

Those are London proofs so the barrel could be older than the other component parts.

Hi Dave, they don't look like London Gunmaker's Co. proofs to me. They look like the standard P and V stamps many of the Birmingham makers were using pre-1813.

You are right. I missed that the top one is not a crown over "GP" but just "P".

The hammer and hammer screw looks like modern replacements to me. The gun has a pleasing look.
