On a other forum we were asked which you prefer in Civil War terms. Like Manassas or Bull Run, Antietam or Sharpsburg, War Between the States or Civil War? I replied that the victor's wrote the history books and their terms have been drilled into student's heads for the last century. So it's no wonder "Southern" terms or names for places are dying out.

Funny you mention that. I talk to my 9 year old daughter about the war all the time and she soaks up quite a bit of what I say, but a couple days ago she really made me proud... She was walking through the living room as I was watching an interview with Shelby Foote and she said confidently "He's from the south." I said yeah, he's got a thick accent. She said "No, he said Sharpsburg instead of Antietam!" I don't recall telling her about that so it must have been a while back. Smart girl!

If you want to understand the real motivations of the Texians for challenging and fighting the coup, one need only to read the Texas Declaration of Independence.

The details of the battle at the Alamo may not be glorious, but the overwhelming fact remains that 189 men who knew what they were in for and the healthy of whom had a choice, decided to fight fiercely and to the death for something they believed in and succeeded in taking over three times their number of aggressors with them. How many citizen soldiers would do the same today?

There was zero industry and almost no agriculture or farming besides subsistence in the state until the place was settled and the Germans and Czechs brought their talents here. Charles Schreiner and Richard King came later. Slavery was never the issue.

Read this a year or so ago. Very interesting. The characters were not what we are led to believe, with the possible exception of Boone. Boone was a lot closer to the way he is represented.
