i am really enjoying this forum, and learning alot. brand new to muzzleloaders. bought a Hawken rifle that hits tight on 1st time out.......went to a pistol shoot & got hooked on that. nice bunch of people. so i got a pistol. traditions 50 cal trapper. i have not fired it yet, but am shooting sunday in a pistol match !!! was going to wait, but was talked into it.....hope to shoot a couple times before then so i don't look like a complete idiot out there. it's a 25 yard shoot, both hands acceptable. any advice would be appreciated. sorry for the long post....a liuttle excited i guess.

Advice: Buy a gallon of tooth whitener - you'll be grinning from ear to ear for a month.

And don't be concerned about looking like a newbie. Fact is, you are one and you can't hide it, nor should you. Enjoy it, revel in it, wrap yourself up in it and have a ball. Make mistakes (just don't do anything unsafe) and laugh at them. Take advice freely and with a grain of salt. If they laugh and point, just grin at them and say, "Damn, this is fun!" Every one of them has made the same mistakes and more than you'll make all day, and they know it. You'll have more friends than you will know what to do with.

Yeah, I decided to go ahead and shoot pistol in our recent championship match, knowing damn well I had no chance. So I went into it with a "I'm gonna have fun" attitude. When others asked how I was doing I simply responded "having fun!".

I've shot some pretty high caliber matches, knowing full well I would end up being close to the bottom of the heap. The way I figure it, somebody has to finish last, and believe me, it's no big deal when your doing what you love.

thank you all for the responses.....i WILL have fun for sure. got to the range this evening, and was pleasantly surprised. the pistol shoots well, and i enjoyed it very much. i really enjoy cleaning the muzzleloaders. very satisfying to me.

I have the very same pistol and took it out for the first time Sunday. Man! It was such a joy to shoot. all I find myself thinking about this week is when I'll shoot it again. I'm a newbie too

Welcome to the DARK SIDE!

Mykeal is spot-on with his assessment of organized club Shoots! That's how I got started in BP. I hung-around watching and was invited to shoot someone Else's gun. The League Chairman, now a very good friend, wouldn't take "no" for an answer, so I tried it! Got hooked, and haven't looked back :haha: .

The best advice that I can give is to try to watch how the winners win. It's probably that they're consistent in everything that they do, from pouring the charges, seating the balls, and especially starting with a CLEAN GUN!

As Bugs Bunny would say, "You meet such Innnterrrresting people" at blackpowder shoots. I learnt, long time passing, if I got serious, I couldn't hit the broad side of a mountain. If I did it for fun, I had fun!

I Own A Trapper Also. My Best load For It Is 40 grains of goex With a .490 Lead ball And A .010 Patch. :thumbsup: If I Go Higher The accuracy Suffers. If I Go Lower It Gets A Little Better. Go Have Fun !

Pistol shooters will help you where rifle shooters will not. It's a fact, pistol shooters are a different group and they will help their own.

Everyone starts at a different level with a pistol, depending on natural ability. Your goal is only to shoot against yourself, no one else and to beat your previous score.

As far as I am concerned, there are 2 folks who pass on sage advice, mykeal and Jim/OH when it comes to pistols.
