Either not enough fire getting to the powder or the powder itself has been affected by something.

1) Damp or contaminated powder source?
2) Powder gets contaminated once in the breech?
3) Damp fire channel?
4) Partial obstruction in fire channel?

Was it a new can of powder? Once had a new can of powder that just was not up to par, it was the same brand I always shoot. Borrowed some powder from a friend who was shooting with me problem went a way.

roundball brings up one that I have had a problem with, obstructed fire channel.

I use pipe cleaners to clean the nipple and to dry the nipple. When looking through the nipple after cleaning, its appears that there is no pipe cleaner material in the nipple. I stick a small drill bit in the nipple and rotate it around, it's amazing the amount of pipe cleaner material that comes out.

I use to re-use cleaning patches after washing them in the washing machine, not any more. I went to a match and the rifle got to where it would not go off each time. I started questioning myself if I had put powder in the gun. I gave up and pulled another rifle out of the truck, same problem, it would fire about 50% of the time.

We used on of the CO2 things to discharge the rifle. A small perfect round piece of cleaning patch floated down range. The cleaning jag was cutting the old patches and leaving a circular piece at the bottom of the barrel acting as an obstruction. I checked my dirty cleaning patches in my can and most had a circle cut out of them.

I only use new cleaning patches and do not rotate the cleaning rod at the bottom of the barrel.

Could be a crapped up breech. Soak it good then run a bore sized scrapper in there and see what comes out.

crud in the nipple/drum maybe left over from last cleaning? that is one drawback with cappers, have to clean that area.

I had a couple delayed ignitions this past hunting season. Asked about it on this board and described the hole situation to these guys. They came up with the explanation of a " fuse effect". Rather than me try to explain i put a link to my post and you can read there explanation of it all. BTW. the " fuse effect" is what it turned out being for my case. http://www.muzzleloadingforum.com/fusionbb/showpost.php?post/340542/

thanks guys,, first off it's a flintlock...second it was same can of powder i'd been using,3f goex,i did notice...accidently! that unusal amount of crud in breech, but, not sure how the breech plug is shaped, and i couldn't find my 62 scraper, so i used my 50 cal.scraper, maybe the centermark plug is beveled/coned like? an the 62 scraper isn't gettin it all out??? maybe take some of the black ink stuff(that's the technical term for it???) and put the 62 scraper down an see how much ink comes off, then file that an do it again??? anyone had to do that? could be also as simple as (without starting a primer arguement!) maybe i put 3f in the primer instead of 4f...it do make a difference on this gun..)but i don't think thats it, powder flowed nice when loading,,maybe left gunk (another technical term!) in the breech? thanks for all the advice! hangfires stink! anyone got an idea of shape of breechplug in centermarks tulle? thanks RC

two of my rifles have the touch hole right at the face of the breech plug. If I don't run a scraper down the bore they will gunk( tech term) up. that will usually clear my problem

Oh Ah humm try and tighten the nut on the stock, that sems to work for me. :blah:

This is the place to start. Clean with a scrapper that fits. If you use a lot of patch lube "TOO WET" you will have a brown crust caked on the breech face.
Try this and vent pick, it'll shoot OK.
