Almost black stock

I would not use any solvent-based stain on maple, it will leave the stock looking muddy...

It depends on the solvent in the stain.

Oil stain can look muddy.

Alcohol stain is crisp and bright.

Has anyone tried staining a maple stock almost black. I’m thinking on my next build I would like a real dark stock, with slightly darker stripes like what a black phase tiger would look like. If so could you post pictures please?

Could make some vinegaroon.

Yup. I used India ink. Worked well. It was a kit rescue and had a lot of patches, and the owner asked for black. I asked how black? He said Black black. I think it looked rather nice. Definately different.

I think I used three applications of diluted ferric nitrate on this one.
