I recently made a small cutting tool with a flexible shank with which I can cone the flashhole from the inside of the barrel by threading it thru the 1/16" hole from the inside and attaching a handheld grinder to the outside. I tried to mimic the cross-section of the commercial vent liners. I have tried it with pieces of scrap barrels and it seems to work well. What are your opinions on this? Am I missing something or is this feasible?

Sounds like you're on to something there...

To be able to cone a flash-hole without removing the barrel and/or breech would be a great time saver...

:hmm: Perhaps there's a market for something like this? :hmm:

This is what I came up with years ago, I make them up out of finishing nails which are then forged, ground and hardened. They too are driven by a power drill.

I made the drawing up for some guys over at American Longrifles forum.

Musketman :imo:from the original post it looks like the barrel still has to be removed and then the breech plug removed to " thread it through the 1/16 hole from the inside" :results:

When a touch hole gas erodes out to 1/8" you can't get much pressure up, even in a Bess. I welded the thing shut, didn't want to over cook it so didn't get much penetration.

I redrilled and made an accidental liner, 1/8" down to 5/32" ::
