When I was a young'un we used alum & baking soda to tan thin hides hair on. Anyone still doing that or are there better ways today?

When I lobster trapped every once in a while you would get " robin's eggs" under your skin & we would cut them open & pack it with alum to " suck the poison blood out"

:shocked2: fun times what with the screaming and all.
 
Iv head of that but never did it myself I use sea salt rub the non fur side down tack em to some wood leave them till dry then work them till soft and smoke them unless im gonna sale them at the end of trapping season then I just salt them.
