I use American Pioneer Powder but never knew that there was such a difference in powders. Could someone that is familiar with this powder explain what the difference is? I have heard that it will burn hotter. How much hotter? is it safe? Is it a good powder (in your experience) to use? Thanks in advance. :hatsoff:

Oh boy....Looks like the SUB vs BP debate is about to begin again..... :shocked2:

I used to use APP. I have gone back to real Goex Black Powder, about a year ago. I will just let you know about my experiance with APP, and leave the debate about subs, and real blck powder for another time. APP is a clean burning powder. It had decent ignition in my percussion MLs, however, I was using musket caps, not #11 caps. It had unreliable ignition in my flintlocks. It felt like it had less recoil, and muzzle blast, when compared to equal amounts of black powder. I do not have a chrony, but I suspect it produces less velocity. I noticed this shooting at the range, and using it right out of the can. If left exposed to the air, it definately looses power. I left a load in my ML for a couple of days during a past hunting season, and went to shoot it out, to put a fresh load in, and it was noticably weak. I would not use it for hunting anymore. Cleanup of APP was the same as any other powder I have used. Bucket of warm soapy water, and thourough rinse. Like I said, I use Goex now.

If it works for you then keep using it. A lot of people like it. Most people here will use real black powder but it fowls a lot more and smokes a lot more. Give pyrodex a try to. I use Goex. I think it is the best if you can get it even with the smoke and fowling. The smoke is the fun part!!

Here's a similiar thread with more info.

I use APP primarily for cartridge loads for Cowboy Action Shooting. It is a very mild powder, with little fouling. It is probably on the bottom of the "power" scale. It cleans up easily and works well with modern bullet lubes. It is very hydroscopic (absorbs water) in its unfired state and smokes more than real BP. It also has a sweet smell to it, probably because its sugar based.
I have used it in a percussion target pistol and gotten very good 25 yard groups with patched RB. Because of its penchant for absorbing water I wouldn't hunt with it (Oregon). I have also found it is very hard on brass, turning cases and any brass gun parts green pretty darn quick.
The FFg version doesn't meter very well and seems to have a wide range of granule sizes. The FFFg seems more uniform. Have no idea about "Shockey's Gold" as I ain't paying those kind of prices for what I use it for.
As far as it being safe, well yeah, as long as you load it according to manufacturer directions its going to be safe.
It's O.K. as far as the substitutes go and will do in a percussion gun. I tend to relegate it strictly to pistol type cartridges for CAS just because of the ease of loading and very loose accuracy requirements along with the very mild recoil.

Thanks for the heads up. :v I will have to get some Goex and give that a try. Seems to me that the majority like it better. So what will it hurt to try it and see for myself? Thanks again.

ANOTHER CONVERT!!!! :hatsoff: "Welcome to the dark side Luke...." :rotf:

For myself I shot Goex. It works well for me in my flinter and once I got the kinks worked out with my lock and pan priming technique, I have very fast and reliable ignition. Now all I have to do is work on my aim...

Good luck, and welcome to the forum.

I do a lot of shooting, and I mean a lot. For the most part I use only Black powder, but after last hunting season the Wally world here had pyro on clearance for 5.00 a can, so I cleaned out 3 WW to teh tune of 25#, and I have one can left. I dont really have a problem with the subs, but I do feel, along with my good friend Mr. chronograph that BP is by far more consistent.

Black Powder the "real deal" anything else is just a

SUBSTITUTE

I bought some Goex but again it says a blackpowder substitute and it is made (in part) by Pioneer Powder! Whats the story here?
:hmm: :hmm: :hmm:

There sell more than one powder-type. One is real - other is substitute. If yours is called "Pinnacle", you purchased the substitute. With a foil seal lid remaining & receipt of purchase, there should be no problems exchanging it for the real stuff.

After trying the Subs I am going back to black. I do not like 777's crud ring and I am not impressed with APP crappy shelf life. I will not even try Pinnicle considering issues with the other. Next can of powder I will buy and that will be shortly will be Goex Black Powder the real deal.

Still Hunter,
If for no other reason, I would
not use it because of who their bought and paid
for spokesman is. Mr I've shot every animal that
has ever walked the Earth with my I/L and my
records will show it. :hmm:
snake-eyes :(
