This may be your opportunity to test J. F. Cooper's claim by using silk as patching material. Find a thin scarf or dress.
I no longer have a 45-70. I have a 570gn CBE gas check mold that I could NEVER get to shoot well, tried it in 3 different guns from 1000fps to 2000fps ( 458wm ) and it keyholed every single time. I'm sure it would work for someone but not for me.I have Lee 45/70 in 340,405 and 500 must to the same results as yourself. I also have the newer 405 with the semi-hollow base. If you don't have that one, I would recommend picking it up.
You'd need a faster twist than the usual 45-70 of 1 in 16, but the Win Mag should have a faster twist. I would have thought it would work in that one. Interesting.I no longer have a 45-70. That wasn't J. F. Cooper's claim. It was some script writer that wanted to spice up a shooting scene. That claim has been debunked a long time ago. This may be your opportunity to test J. F. Cooper's claim by using silk as patching material. Find a thin scarf or dress.
It actually was worse. But anyway we are way off topic,as interesting as the discussion isYou'd need a faster twist than the usual 45-70 of 1 in 16, but the Win Mag should have a faster twist. I would have thought it would work in that one. Interesting.
