I bought a C&B Revolver, a Colt 1860 clone by Pietta, in September, based on lots of discussions and questions here on this board. Love it! One question though. I always heard that the Remington had notches between the chambers so you could load six shots and then rest the hammer between the nipples. Also heard that the Colts did not have this feature. But the other day I was fooling around with my (unloaded!) pistol and found that it had small "pins" between the nipples, and that I could place the hammer down between the nipples on the pins. It seems that it would stay there safely. Is this original or a Pietta-added safety feature? Is it safe to use these pins?

I am only asking out of curiousity. I load all my single actions with five shots only, simply for tradition's sake.

The pins are there for the same reason that the notches on the Remington are, and I believe that they were a feature of the original Colts. The Remington's notches are deeper and more positive,(and usable), IMO, but I wouldn't trust the pins.

The five shot load is a good rule. I have a Remington and an Old Army that I trust enough to load with six and let the hammer rest between the chambers. My Colt Walker, it doesn't even have the pins you mention, it is strictly a five shot gun.
