I'm thinking of using this Gun -- Pedersoli 12 double - for ducks this year and am wondering how you guy's would prepare for wet weather -- ' I'm in Washington State !!! ' . Is there a way to waterproof the nipple ?
Also I'm wondering if I should go to a Musket Cap and if so does anyone know what thread size these Pedersoli's are ??
Thanks Oldbadger

If caps fit tightly as they should, they are pretty much rainproof. Get a dry load down the bore with tight wads and you should have no problems. I think you might have trouble getting musket nipples to work. The recess in the hammer nose is pretty small and if alignment is just slightly off-center the hammer may not hit the cap properly. Actually, I think musket caps may be no more waterproof than standard #10 or #11 CCI caps.

Any percussion gun can use the "cow's knee" (a flap of waterproofed leather) to cover the locks like the flint shooters use, just a little added insurence in wet weather...

I have hunter with a c.v.a. double for about 12 yrs. for birds in central wa. musket caps to me are a waste of time .
You can use the little cap protectors , or a cows knee as (don't do this in muzzleloader big game seasons though ) M.M.said .No restrictions on blackpowder shotguns other than lead shot in water fowl seasons yet.

go flint smooth bore and no caps! works for me .
:m2c:

' cows knee ' - Ahh. I was kind of thinking you guy's would be putting something like bees wax or Vaseline around them . I'll be looking into that cows knee.
Speaking of caps -- I have been using Remington #10's and some CCI #11's - both of them I need to pinch or squash them before I put them on or they fall off. Could I have the wrong nipples in there ??

" go flint smooth bore and no caps! " -- If I ever find one I'll be using it -- you can bet on that. I've got them all -- from auto's to lever to pumps to belt fed - and this thing I have to load from the front is making all the rest very jealous -- I think I better keep it in the closet and not in the safe with all the rest. It might have a bent barrel next time I take her out !!!!

Slenk - Central Washington bird hunting -- that wouldn't be Moses Lake would it ??

Oldbadger,
I bought a canvas possibles bag from Track of the Wolf.
"#BAG-GAME-C Possibles bag, brown canvas, 7" by 9", leather closure tab . . . $29.95
Serious hunters carry a small bag of essentials. This bag is 7" x 8" x 2" deep. The main compartment has two inside pockets. The leather
tab latches on a brass stud. Heavy #4 canvas with brass closure. Strap adjusts 5"."

I find that the flap will cover the nipples quite well in the rain while walking or sitting in the blind.

The bag can be seen in my avatar.

For bird hunting i always used a shooting vest along with the bag. I carried pre-measurered powder charges in cut down black plastic .12 ga hulls in one large front pocket, and pre measurered shot in red .12 ga hulls. To keep the powder and shot in i get corks at a craft store the right size and i used a needle with some 15 lb test fishing line on it to sew through the center of the cork with a large knot on the end so it won't pull back through. I sew it from what will be the outside to the inside(the bottom that goes in the hull.) I then put a large knot in the oter end of the line (which is about 3-4" long) and attach it to the side of the hull with a wrap of black electrical tape. The for a fast reload just reach in your left pocket and grab a load of powder, pop the cork(you wont loose it because of the fishing line) then a wad out of where ever you have them, the rt. pocket for a load of shot and then your overshot wad. Pull your capper out and cap, and you are ready to go.

Howdy
Yea I agree with REB. He has a good plan. I also carry a small "white wax birthday candle". Once I load a clean dry load down both barrells of my Navy arms fowler (a double 12). I place a tight cap on the nipple, then I drip wax onto the nipple area (DO NOT!!! place the flame by the nipples, and let the wax drip from a distance, and always keep the muzzle in a safe direction when doing this). I keep The premeasured powder loads in a plastic film canister this also works (if you pop the film canister open and pour it for your second reload it also speeds up the reloading. I use the oval shaped ones they act as a pouring spout. When using wax method It's common sense that makes the day. Also use a tight over powder wad is a must. Keep all the wads lubed. Good hunting... If you are going to try the nipple wax method do it on an unloaded fire arm before you go out into the field, test out the nipple firing until you match the right amount of wax needed. I love duck jump'en here in the wet Ontario swamps and this works for me rain or shine. :results: Best regards Loyalist Dawg :hatsoff:

Try making your COW's KNEE out of plastic wrap. You can carry a bunch of the stuff and it comes in handy. Just wrap it loosely all the way around the gun at the nipples. It will get wet on the outside but you should be nice and dry to the inside. This might not be period correct but if you're hunting, wet, and cold... well you the judge. If the action is fast and furious then, use your leather knee. When you are under seige from the elements, wrap your leather in some of that plastic wrap as well. Good hunting! and by the way...if you shoot a bunch ; them nipples will squash down and the caps will stay on better. I liked the contribution of the red and black shell hulls for storage...I'm going to try that. Thanks Rebel! adios

Slippyfoote,
For carrying shot, I use a 32 gauge hull inside a 28 gauge hull for 1 1/8 oz loads, and a 16 gauge inside a 12 gauge for larger loads.

I have containers about the size of your little finger with an attached top to carry the powder. PC, no, but then wearing hunter orange and driving to my hunting area isn't either.

Sincerely,
AJ/OH
