Howdy:

I have a .50 caliber Lyman Great Plains percussion rifle that will only be used for local muzzleloading matches. My wife and I shot in our first match last weekend and got rather hooked. The distances were 25 to 100 yards offhand on both paper and steel targets. I have a good supply of Swiss 3f, 2f and 1 1/2f on hand from CAS. Which granualation of these three would you all recommend I start with keeping in mind that Swiss granulation a bit finer than Goex or Elephant BP.

I sure hope I posted this in the right place.

Best,
CB

Well, not saying it is right, but I am shooting a .495 ball, .018 cotton drill, Birddog 6 lube and 70gr. of 2F Swiss in mine. This is my 100yd./deer hunting load and it is accurate for me.

If you are looking for a target load that won't kick you very much, work loads up with the 1 1/2 F Swiss. If you are looking for a hunting load at velocity, then use the 2F Swiss, which is similar to our Goex FFFg powder. The Swiss 3Fg is like our priming powder. ( Goex FFFFg powder.) I don't know what use you put that to in a percussion gun. Perhaps you can trade that for another can of either 1 1/2 or 2 Swiss.

Since your interest lies with targets, you don't need any rompin' stompin' loads. I'd expect that any of those Swiss powders should do OK, I'd start with about 40 grains and work up in 5 grain steps, looking for the tightest group. I'm not inclined to go much over 60 grains for target work because the recoil you don't even notice for a few shots can have a cumulative effect over the course of a day.

I also have a lyman gpr. when I first got it I called layman and asked "them" (layman)what they reconmened for a hunting load and I was told by the layman people to use FFg with 90 grain with a 495 ball and 10-thousand patch.........that's my 2 cents

Rebel: Thanks for correcting my typo........do you feel better now?

I wasn't trying to Feel better, just thought that maybe you were unaware of the correct name. No offence was intended.
