Needs a "few" more coats of oil and the blacking on the barrel needs to be knocked back a bit but for all intensive purposes it's done and ready to hunt.

It came out OK. Surely won't take home any awards. It is amazing what shows up once you get finish on wood. I learned the hard way that you inspect every square inch of every component before you ever take a chisel out of it's holder and strop it.

Began life as an Issac Haines stock & hardware, 38" Rice C weight swamped 54 cal. Shortened to a 13 3/8 LOP, Chambers Golden Age Germanic lock, simple pinned trigger, sheet brass thimbles & patch box, white lightning liner. Aquafortis for color and Tried and True Varnish Oil for finish. Color on the barrel comes from Precision Brand 2 step tool black.

For those with the experience, knowledge and the eye for detail, kindly point out any areas I need to improve upon in my technique and execution. I'm still pretty new at this.

No I don't always have a clean bench (this is the exception to the rule)... I just didn't want to look like a slob @ photo time...

Beautiful rifle! What is the dark spot in the stock the last picture? It looks like a crack on my worn out computer screen. Hope your rifle stock didn't crack.

Very nice, if I could build something like that............Well wish I could.

Wow, impressive...and any deer would be proud to be shot with it !
:hatsoff:

I personally like the barrel...any I have that started out with browned or aged steel look, I've changed to a dark gray color myself.
(B.C. Perma Blue, rubbed back with WD40 & 0000 steel wool)

Pbfbfbfft! Why wouldn't that 'take home any awards'? Jeez Louise - that's about as good as it gets!

In my scholarly opinion that rifle is simple, with an understated elegance that just warms the soul.

I think you need to build more of those myself. :applause:

Rootsy That is elegance in it's simplicity. If she shoots as good as she looks you won't be able to miss. I have a work bench like that, except it's under a bunch of tools, rags , sand paper, stain bottles Etc.. At least I remember having a work bench.

Right off the bat..........

You did right with the triggerguard, good clean facets, none of the polished over "lump" look. As that brass gets some patina, that triggerguard is going to look fabulous.

I really like how you didn't go bongos on the maple, and went with a lightly figured blank, it looks really classy- not too flashy, but I can see the hints of figure. Love it.

The military style patchbox is also cool, it is simple, but goes with the wood. I want to see this rifle after a 1000 rounds and a few years.

Good Job Roosty!!!
How long from start to finish?
I got all the parts to build one and was just wondering the time frame to complete,Thanks for sharing.

I started her in January but aside from a day job I also farm so summer is pretty busy and gets no gun time. About 80 hours into this one.

Pretty darn nice - I really like it simple and I think it is very nicely done.

great looking rifle!

By the way, i looked into the Precision Brand tool black, and it was a bit too expensive for me.

Nonetheless, it does give a great looking finish!
