My source of black powder for quite a few years was a distributor/vendor that attended the twice yearly big matches at Berryville, Arkansas. He was well known and liked and his prices very reasonable compared to most retail. Today he announced he is no longer going to be selling powder at the event. This will be a huge blow to many. Especially those who bought their annual supply from him. Fortunately, I have a small stockpile on hand and will have time to find a new source.

In the right conditions how long will a can of Goex last?

It will last for about one long range session Lee, just one session.

Any that is unused, stored with the cap closed, will last about 700 years.

Decades certainly. There was an article in Muzzleblasts past where the author was shooting powder from pre WWII, WWI and even some 19th century powder. It all went off.

Some of it wasn't so hot when matching velocities, but the cans didn't have tamper proof seals, the history/providence was sketchy (bought at auction) and may have been compromised.

2-3 years ago I was given 3 cans of Goex 3F made in 1970...about 40 years old and worked perfctly...if anything, it seemed to be a tad hotter than today's Goex

Black powder becomes more potent over time.

First time I've ever heard of that. What is it that changes in the powder to make it more powerful?

Yes.
According to the email I saw, which was sent out by his daughter, Don is out of the powder business.
He also took powder for years to the Western Nationals.

I read this a long time ago from an allegedly credible source. I don't remember who stated it and do not know what changes to make the alleged increase in potency.

If you order a full case (25 lb.) from TOW, it costs $15.92/lb., delivered to your door. All shipping and hazmat fees included. It can be any mix of granule sizes, as long as it adds up to 25lb.
It is drop shipped from Powder Incorperated of Clarksville, AR. I don't know if they have any local distributors.
Canadian customers must have it shipped to a US address and bring it accross the border personally. Be carefull of your limit, though. 25lb. is more then one person is allowed to bring accross at one time.
Minnesota customers will have to add sales tax if delivered in-state.

Sorry to hear that. I've bought many a case of powder from him over the years. Just call him up and place the order and he'd send it out and tell me to send him a check off the invoice. Amazing. Last couple of times I ordered I never received it. They seemed to be having trouble keeping track of things. But they were good folks and I'm sorry to hear they've quit selling BP. A lot of us here in Oklahoma bought from him.
