I made an impulse buy of a Lyman Great Plains .54 that appears to be in great shape. It should get here on a three day approval period later this week. I am assured by the seller that the only modification is the extended rear sight.

Risky to buy on-line I know, but the price is right.

Let's review what I've learned here in recent posts:

Thanks to Roundball's recent experience, I requested a 3 day examination period.

Thanks to Lakota's recent experience, I know that I must check for a ball and powder in the barrel before anything else. I would have done that anyway. When I acquire a used weapon, I tear it down first to clean, inspect and lube.

Thanks to Zonie's reminder, I will check for ringing in the barrel.

Anything I am missing?

Yea, check the nipple threads. I made the mistake of buying one on an auction and not checking the nipple because i never shot the rifle. Thankfully the person i sold it to discovered it before shooting it.

It looks like an older well maintained rifle just check it out well before firing but it looks good to go from here. Best of luck with the new rifle :hatsoff:

Good point. I would have pulled the nipple as part of the inspection but I will pay close attention to condition under the nipple as well.
