I have a round hat from Townsend, turned up on one side, that I'd like to make into a tri-corn. What is used on yours to hold the 3 brims up?

I'm a little confused by the use of the term "round hat." You see, in the context of a previous post, I used the term in contravention to cocked hat, which is the 18th century term for the ubiquitous three cornered hat. At Ft. Osage, when we use the term "round hat" we actually mean something that resembles a top hat, or a hat resembling a stove pipe with a brim.

I suspect you mean a wide brimmed, low crowned hat, correct? If so, there are a couple of options: a stick, or a cockade are the most frequent methods I've seen. I hope this helps.

I generally use cotton thread, of a relatively thick size. You won't be able to punch through the heavy material with a needle, so use a knife or an awl and punch it before hand. If you are just looking to temporarily hold up the brims, I recommend either installing small buttons, or using hook / eye attachments.

i think round hat has applied all along with a low brimed hat and has had no confusion . i have been useing it and others and i havent been confused we all know what we mean lol .tri corn and cocked hat for a tri corn and round hat for a broad brimed hat :m2c: :front:

Do you mean straight pins? Doubt if saftey pins existed then. I'll have to visit the sewing dept at Wallyworld next time. :hmm:

No, not straight or safety. It's more of a bent piece of thin wire that functions as a hook. It is attached to the crown and hooks on the thin "ribbon" that passes through the brim.

Sorry about the quality of the photos.
Here's the ribbon from the outside of the brim and a shot of the hooks. (you can only see two of them)

Again , a good question but no indication of period or place .

For Rev war , the one shown here is the most
popular one .
For F&I war , french side , it has to be
a hook or something to make flat again in case of rain or hot sun . Less visible as possible .

Silk laces to tie the brim to the crown.

"Round hat" means a relatively narrow brimmed hat that has one side of the brim turned up. To the best of my knowledge, it has always meant this.

Now, your round hat brim may or may not be too narrow to really fold up into a good looking cocked hat...
