I'm going to get my hands on some deer antlers, and I'm thinking about trying to make an antler priming horn. If anyone on this forum has made or has one, would you like to post some pictures? I'd like to see some examples!

Here is one I made many years ago. I think if I make another one, I will use a spring loaded dispenser tip and a straight(er) antler tine. I fitted the brass tip to cover the hole drilled into the body of the primer.

Nice work. How did you hollow out the horn? I use a fosterner bit to start my hole so that it is round at the end to fit the brass in.Then burn out the remaining horn with a hot rod bent to the contour of the horn. This is best done outside on a day when SWMBO is not around.

I just used drill bits in increasing sizes until I had what I felt to be adequate capacity without getting too close to the outside of the antler. The hot rod method sounds like a good idea (when done outside) to get more capacity than a round hole would give, as you can follow the contour of the antler.

thanks for the hot rod tip! ... now there's a new and improved method for me to while away the not-so-idle hours.
