Another local source for blackpowder is gone here. I went to Gander Mountain to pick up a can, and the clerk told me that they were out and that they recieved a memo from corporate HQ informing them that Gander Mountain will no longer sell blackpowder. Now the nearest place to me that carries it is the Log Cabin Shop, and that is an hour and a half away, and besides that, it is very dangerous for my pocket book to go into that store! :shocked2:

well that ain't good! log cabin costs ya money?? gee that's hard to believe :shocked2: maybe gander mt. is lookin out fer yer finances...evidently their not lookin out fer theirs! but i can feel for ya, i don't know anyplace around me that sells it,so i jes bite the bul...er..round ball and buy 25 lbs at a time..investment! good investment...lotsa powder yeah! RC

Theirs a gun shop near me(5mi) Minerva,O that has loose powder,Lidi,(China) for 10.50 lb.He imports it. We shot some 2ff and 80grs was equal to 100 of Prodex pellets. Iam 70mi from Log Cabin. Last I bought their in 2006 was 15.00, know what you mean by hanging on to your wallet. Dilly

I was just calculating the dough required for a 25 pound batch and how long it would last. I usually burn up somewhere around 3 pound a year, so 25 cans would last 8 years?! Then factor in all the gas and driving done to pick up one can. Perhaps it is time to buckle down and order a heap of the stuff!

now ya got it! jes ck. around, hall explosives and j&j pyro, are who i deal with, thet're both great to gdeal with,no hassels, delivered right to the door.. i ck. tween the two cause sometimes price difference is ahhh noticable..gee seems like there'd be someone clost ya that would go in on it with ya,even 5 lbs, cut it $50 at least..imagine,,never have to worry again,,, :winking: RC

Local gun shop here in Beaver County wanted 18 dollars a pound for Schuetzen! That is kind of stiff, but you gotta figure that getting the license to sell it and the magazine to store it is a pain in the butt. So, I just bought 25 pounds from Powder Inc., to split it up with some buddies. (Prices don't go up till the end of the month...they will honor the 2006 prices through then.)UPS delivered to the door. They mixed granulations and even brands for me! They were out of KIK 3f so I bought a pound of 2f KIK and a pound of 3F Swiss to try, 21 pounds Goex 3f, and 2 pound Goex 2F. My share of the powder (12 pounds) cost me about 130 dollars! Get some buddies to go in with you and buy a case!

After you get the 25 pounds you will need a place to store it. I have one of Sportsman Guide's super heavy steel hand grenade boxes to store the cans of powder. For 25 pounds you might want two of the boxes.

Having the powder is good. Storing it safely is important.

Many Klatch

I have to drive about an hour out to Winchester to buy black powder. No one carries it where I live. Not many places even stock loose Pyrodex. I was in my Dick's-used-to-be-Galyans a couple of days ago and all they had were small boxes of .50 Pyrodex pellets. Main problem for the gun shops here are the strict storage requirements.

Do you have to be home to sign for the powder or can you arrange to pick it up from the nearest UPS office? I would gladly order the stuff, but I'm almost never home when the deliveries come. I read on the website that you must sign on delivery.

Yep, your suposed to sign but I've been getting UPS deliverys for the last 5 years and never been there to sign for packages. Still I wouldn't want them leaving a case of powder on my front porch when no one's home.

I think you have a handle on the economics. Besides,
I haven't seen a trend for black powder to get cheaper over time.

Clutch

I decided to go with Graf & Son's.

You can order smaller batches.

I bought 10 pounds of 3f and one pound of 4f, came out to $13.34 a pound delivered and will last my dad & I about 2-3 years...

i've never had to sign for it but, i like to be there cause that's the fastest delivery i get,he runs up the driveway puts it down nice and gentle like then skidaddles back down to the truck..and i know he ain't in hurry to make his other deliveries.. :rotf: should order some myself, like clutch says it don't seem to get cheaper,an i use about 15 a year... :shocked2: gee that's alot heh? RC

I as well as most of you are to blame for this trend.

I usually order 25lb lots for no better reason that economics.
Recently I found myself out of powder & went to the only place in Northern KY that I know of that sells the stuff. I only buy from him in a pinch because he charges right at $20lb.
Well I walked in there last week to buy some & he told me that he no longer sells it. The paperwork BS, storage requirements & lack of sales made him decide to stop carrying it.

What does that mean to all of us? Well so I could save $100-150 a year I contributed in the loss of one more vendor.

We all need to support our sport the best that we may.
For example, when I go to Rondys I try to buy from every vendor that has something that I want. I will even buy things that I know I can buy cheaper elsewhere because I want these guys to come back next year.

Am I the only one that thinks this way??

good thing i live 20 miles from J & J pyro in moscow PA that sells goex :v ...........bob

The last local shop that sold bp here closed down last year. I joined the local club and we now buy in bulk, The last shipment we recieved is available to club members for $9.00 a pound for Scheutzen brand. I can get Goex from a friend in another club 70 miles away for $13.00

Boomer, i sorta adree, and do buy alot from sutlers at the 'vous and lil shops too, actually spread my buyin around if possible, there are no shops around here that sell bp, gees yer lucky ya can find antyhing for traditional guns.. but seems to me,an i know there's gov't regs and paperwork an all that, but if you handle bp to sell, selling it for double what i can get for is askin fer no sales.. i guess i figure(?) that it(bp) would be a great item to have to sell...reasonably priced, because it would bring folks into the store, and really, when is the last time ya walked in a gun shop and jes bought one thing? gosh ya walk in ta get powder and may walk out with a gun or balls or patches...that jes my thoughts....asides if ya use 12-15 lbs. a year..@$20 per..yikes! jes my opinion...RC :hatsoff:
