When practicing at the range, or working up a load with rifles of 50 caliber or higher I always wear my "Past" sissy pad. Those curved brass or iron butt plates can really bruise when shooting from the bench. Offhand, I don't have any problems.I was shooting a 50 cal Kentucky long rifle with 80 grains of FFG and round balls. After around ball 20 I could not find a spot on my shoulder that did not hurt. It actually beat my shoulder black and blue.
Yup, yup, yup…most of my shooting is fine.I was shooting a 50 cal Kentucky long rifle with 80 grains of FFG and round balls. After around ball 20 I could not find a spot on my shoulder that did not hurt. It actually beat my shoulder black and blue.
As already mentioned, when shooting CF or ML rifles off the bench, especially the latter with crescent butt plates, I wear one of those. Much less bruising and recoil induced flinching that way.I haven’t tried it yet, still waiting for the bruising to clear up. It feels good in place, and it might ease that bracing I do for the kick that ain’t helping my groups
Bob McBride of Blackpowder TV has a good video on how to mount a southern mountain rifle with a crescent butt stock. So does Britsmoothy.I was shooting a 50 cal Kentucky long rifle with 80 grains of FFG and round balls. After around ball 20 I could not find a spot on my shoulder that did not hurt. I shoot my 10g without one. 100gns and 2oz plus.BS on mounting wrong shoot my s/s 10 ga and one WLL NEED ONE
Do they fit hooked butt plates?A Limb Saver boot is a much better set up and it stays on the rifle, not on you.
That charge is way too much. Good accuracy will be found much lighter. Try it, you'll like it!Bob McBride of Blackpowder TV has a good video on how to mount a southern mountain rifle with a crescent butt stock. So does Britsmoothy.
I only use 50 grains of 2f in my .50 caliber Kentucky long rifle and it’s very accurate out to 50 yards and probably more. This load is also easy on the old man doing the shooting.
