I've been cleaning guns for more years than I care to count and when I got into BP quite a few years ago I decided to lubricate with the same products and methods I've used successfully on many cartridge guns. I take care of my firearms and never had a spot of rust due to improper cleaning or storage. I read about Bore Butter and the kinds of concoctions used to protect the barrel but never understood why no one recommended a light coat of oil same as you put on the cartridge gun barrel after cleaning. I do remember reading that it was the worst thing to do because it fouls the powder and it won't ignite.

In the beginning, I use to run a clean patch through before shooing in case there was too much oil but have since even stopped doing that before shooting. In all this time, not one load has been oil-fouled and not one spot of rust in my BP longarms or handguns. I buy and use the same products for all my guns regardless of the type of powder that goes in them. The only products I added to my cleaning arsenal for BP are hot water and dish soap.

Are there any other BP cleaning heretics and barrel oilers in the forum?

I oil mine. I did quit using Rem-Oil because it turns brown pretty quickly and always puts everybody in a 'it's rusty' panic. Stored muzzle-down & I've never had any ignition problems.

But then, what do I know? I also use bore-butter on my bullets and pyrodex to launch them.

I have used machine oil on all my rifles and pistols and have no problems with either. I don't understand why others have said it is bad for guns? In my dads machine shop we used oil and plenty of it on just about every type of metal worked on? I think a lot of people` hear it is bad and believe it? I for one no that is not true.

And that's the key for BP cleaning. Water neutralizes the acids formed after the powder burns. Oils alone won't do that, whether it's Ballistol or Remoil or whatever. While I prefer to use Ballistol since it's water soluble, once the residue is neutralized and cleaned with soapy water ( hot preferably ) your personal choice of any good oil as a rust protectant won't hurt a thing.

Heretic? Yes and absolutely proud of it! Starting in the 1960s I used about every gun oil available at that time. This continued up to about 16-17 years ago. But after I found Barricade & BreakFree CLP that's all I've used since then, No sludge, inaccuracy, fouling buildup or ignition problems. You don't even have to swab before you take the rifle for a shoot. I just do, however, out of habit. If I find myself short on those two wonderful products I'll gladly go back to gun oil.

I have used 3 in 1 oil, Rim Oil, sewing machine oil, WD40, Hoppes #9 and probably others throughout the years. I only had one rifle that had a hard time getting the first shot to go off, so before the first shot I would pour a small amount of alcohol into the barrel and prime and fire it off. After I started doing that, I had no problem with that rifle. I am glad that I only had to do this to one gun because I hated to waste alcohol.

I clean with hot water and dawn mixed then shoot PB Blaster down barrel and scrub with a shotgun brush. Swab clean then coat barrel with ballistol or like substance. Before shooting next time I will swab bore with T17 and that is what I lube my patches with every shot.
