Use to eat deer liver all the time until I came across one full of flukes . Dis-gusting ! Never ate one again . Wouldn't even feed that to my dog .

That, plus all the recent years talk of other things that have been discovered like CWD are a real turnoff to me. As far as I'm concerned if meat doesn't come shrink wrapped from a top notch food process that at least has a chance of finding it to be clean and safe, it doesn't get used in our house.

Unfortunately, that is no guarantee that is is free of contamination. CWD is a relative of "Mad cow" disease, and "mad cow" has been found in the USA. That said, if you avoid the brain and spinal column (and lymph nodes) the chance of contamination is lessened (the "infective" prion protein is not found in muscle tissue).

In the end, you never know and I'd rather eat venison than beef. Even if you have become infect with "mad cow" (also known as New Variant Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease), the incubation period may be as long as 10-20 years (or longer).

And Yes, Venison heart is delicious. I use it to make soup with Barley (Heart and Barley soup). The mother of a friend made it stuffed and cooked in the pressure-cooker - absolutely fantastic.

Not trying to convert anyone...eat whatever you like of course...simply made the point that I / we choose to eat meat:
"...from a top notch food process that at least has a chance of finding it to be clean and safe..."
Others mileage may vary

Not saying your were trying to convert anyone.

My point is that we are ALL deluding ourselves if we think that shrink-wrapped and from a supermarket is a mark of quality OR safety. Remember E. coli O157:H7 or the European Mad-cow period?

I enjoy both the heart and the liver, the first few meals from the deer once they are down......yummy

LOL...Never said that...you need to reread my post.

As often as I can nothing better than fresh liver fried up with bacon and onions as soon as we can get it back to the camp. The heart is usually next to go. If it makes it back from camp heart makes an awesom jerky too.

Nope I don't eat them. The Dr. says no organ meat for me. I have ate the liver before and didn't really care for it... it taste to much like liver. Hearts i've never cared for. I do love calf, pork, chicken & beef liver however, but the Dr says no..... :shake: :td:

That doesn't happen at all frequently enough to worry about. Your experience was just a fluke. :hmm:

Almost every animal shot in my area has liver fluke unless shot up on the mountain!

My buddy gets mad at me if I shoot a deer and not bring back the liver or heart for him. I don't eat it personally but he loves it. Just not for me but then again he chews on the liver of whatever deer he shoots to right outta the gut pile. He has always been an odd friend. Used to eat the smelt while they were alive to head first.
